1466 DORCHESTER - RARE HANDSTRUCK "PAID" MARK IN BLACK & RED-BROWN ON SOLDIER's 1d CONCESSION RATE COVERS; Remarkable 1812 pair of fine E's (pencil dates) from Dorchester to a Gunner in the "Invalid Royal Artillery" at Plymouth, both prepaid at the Soldier's 1d Concession Rate, and so having red manuscript "P1" marks and near fine black or red-brown "DORCHESTER" lined mileage marks matching the mostly v. fine black and almost very fine red-brown strikes of the very rare "PAID" mark (DT262; recorded for 1813 only). 1468 ROYAL MESSENGER's TREASURY WARRANT FOR DELIVERING A LETTER TO WALTHAM; Jan. 1567 document (stained in places affecting signature but complete and perfectly legible; full typed transcript) approving the payment of 2s-8d per day for a 5-day journey to deliver one letter to "Mr. Stonehouse Esquier at his house in the Forest of Walt[h]am, and he not being at home I was fayne to seeke him in divers other places in Essex and so made delyverance and then returned back to London..." Rare Royal Messenger's Warrant relating to Essex alone, and unusual in being concerned solely with the delivery of one letter. The charge was 13s-4d for the one letter! PHOTO. £650

LETTER FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT; 22 Sept. 1629 EL (minor dusting but sound) from "the Isle of Wight" addressed "To his much honured Brother in lawe Sir Thomas Sackvill, Knight, at his Mansion House of Biburye, these." Bibury is in Gloucestershire; this is a family letter inviting the addressees to come to London. Privately carried prior to the first public Post Office of England. 1482 RARE VERY EARLY LETTER FOLDED TO A TINY SIZE & SENT BY CARRIER; Minute 16 Aug. 1556 EL (originally folded to 1&Mac189;x1&Mac189; ins. and sealed) apparently from Kent (?) addressed "To John Horsemonden of Gouders [=Goudhurst] yn the Shyr of Kynte, be thys d[elivere]d wth spede; [he is a] s[c]ythe smyth." The letter orders some more scythes and mentions that a payment of £20 in cash will be sent (along with this letter?) by "John Walter, carrier" who is to collect the money in London ("of William Wylkye, clothier"). Very rare early letter (pre-dating the entire 'Corsini' correspondence) clearly dated "1556 & yn the 3&2 yere of the Reyne of Phellype & Mary, by the grace of god, Kynge and Quene of Englond". The smallest early letter that we can recall having seen. [Quoted in full in Philip Beale's recent "England's Mail", p.136.] Photo £400

("ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD CO." imprint on front) to Belfast having this unusual purple (cyclostyled?) mark on the front, along with v. fine black London "5D/F.B."; with 20 Nov. London & 21 Nov. "DUBLIN & BELFAST/DOWN/R.P.O" c.d.s. on the reverse. The first example of this marking that we can recall having seen. Smuggled transatlantic mail that has been seized is extremely rare. Plus stampless c.1900 env. to Cornwall (addressed to "England", so presumably from overseas) with no postal markings or charges except for a mostly very fine boxed "PARCEL[Arms]POST/This Parcel has been opened for Cus-/toms examination and been officially/sealed in the Post Office". 1489 "LYNN REGIS" - PRE-POST OFFICE LETTER ADDRESSED TO LONDON; 26 Sept. 1634 EL (part contents lost) from "Lynn Regis" addressed "To his very loving Brother Mr. Guybon Goddard att Lincolns Inne give this in London"; presumably carried by common carrier. Interesting letter about buying a book (a "herbal") in London for no more than "40 shillings" (seems expensive for 1634!), and mentioning letters sent together (one sent in this one for someone in Holborn) and routing a book parcel via Cambridge. 1502 RYE - ROYAL EXCHEQUER MESSENGER's WARRANT FOR DELIVERING A WRIT TO RYE; c.1588 (must be pre-1590; the signatory died in 1589) document (light stains in places barely affecting text or signature; full typed transcript) approving the payment of 46s-8d for delivering a writ "to one Richard Caverley of Rye in the Countie of Sussex"; signed by "Wa: Mildmay". Unusual relating only to a single letter being delivered; at a rate of 2s-8d per day this suggests the journey took 17½ days! PHOTO. £650
