| 1291 | ENGLISH CIVIL WAR - RARE CROMWELLIAN ORDER FOR ARRANGING MAILS TO THE WEST COUNTRY; Important 23 Aug. 1644 manuscript order (stained; no address sheet) apparently sent within the Parliamentarian bureaucracy in London headed as from the "Committee [of the] Navy" and signed by "Giles Grene" (MP & Chairman of the Committee) regarding the establishment of an emergency routing "for the Carrying of Letters & pacquetts betweene Portsmouth & my Lord Generall's [= the Earl of Essex's] Army for the service of Parliament..." It orders two or three "Kettches" to be made ready at Portsmouth & Weymouth for the purpose. At this time Essex's Parliamentary Army was in serious trouble in Cornwall and the roads through Devon were clearly blocked to Parliamentary messengers, hence the need for communicating by sea. [With full typed transcript & research notes.] Fascinating and rare insight into the problems of sending mail at the height of the Civil War. PHOTO. | £360 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
