BLUE "[Crown]/REGISTERED" MARK ON INTERNAL COVER; Very fine and colourful 18 Dec. 1857 env. registered to London with 1d Red 'stars' and 6d lilac (some cut perfs.) tied by v. fine "723" numerals having a superb strike of the rare Southampton "[Crown]/REGISTERED" mark on the front matching a similar blue "SOUTHAMPTON" c.d.s. This mark had only been issued in March 1857 and we have only recorded two examples (1859/60; both in black; see Cavendish's Vivien Sussex 6 Mar. 2002 auction, lot 176). 1225 EARLY WAFER SEAL OF PETRARCH: 1837 (1 June) EL from London to Newcastle-under-Lyme, endorsed "Single paid" in m/s and with reed cruciform London Paid mark beneath with a fine seal (in white on a gold background) depicting the bust of Petrarch on the reverse. The contents include "I seal this with a beautiful specimen of wafers manufactured in Florence which I stole from Chandos house.....I hope they won't steal it again in the Post Office". 1228 EARLY ROYAL ARMORIAL WAFER SEAL ON ENVELOPE EX WINDSOR CASTLE TO STUBBING COURT, NEAR CHESTERFIELD: 1840 (3 Feb.) envelope addressed to Lady Dunfermline at Stubbing Court, rated "1" in red, sealed with an ornate gold/white Royal Coat of Arms joined with those of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This letter was sent one week before the Queen's marriage to Prince Albert (and possibly contained an invitation to same) and is illustrated on page 13 of Champness & Trapnell.Photo plate 16 £120
1229 REMARKABLE USAGE OF A POSTAGE STAMP IN LIEU OF A WAFER SEAL: 1841 (23 November) EL from Tadcaster to York endorsed "Private" in m/s with a 1d red adhesive used as a wafer seal contrary to GPO notice to the public dated 7th May 1840. 1243 THE FOLLY OF THE AFGHAN WAR: 1843 (11 June) env. from Bristol to Stoke Newington sealed by black/pink "The Afghan war cost 15 million pounds sterling & 13 thousand lives, and produced a harvest of-Two old wooden gates!!" wafer. Illustrated on colour plate 7 of Champness & Trapnell. Note: the "Two wooden gates" reference alludes to the capture of the fortress of Ghuznee by General John Keane in 1839 and the subsequent removal of the fortress gates. 1275 1d BLACK COVER WITH YELLOW "WE ALL DO FADE/[Leaf]" WAFER SEAL & LATE USE "INCH/TURE" IN CIRCLE; c.1840 env. (minor wear & slight stains) to "Methven, Perth" franked by 1d Black (Plate 4; RI - very nearly 4m) tied by smudgy orange-red Maltese Cross, having a mostly very fine Prestamp curved "INCH/TURE" in circle (recorded from 1803!) on the side-flap. Sealed with a fine embossed bright yellow circular wafer seal inscribed "WE ALL DO FADE" round a central leaf motif. Doubly rare; few 1d Black covers have been recorded with any kind of wafer seal, and this is a remarkably late usage of the prestamp "INCH/TURE" mark. Photo £240
