TWO CLEVER REBUS 'PUZZLE' TYPES; 1894 pair of 1d lilac fronts ex London each with complicated hand-painted Rebus addresses which do not appear to have caused the P.O. any problems. 1175 ATTRACTIVELY COLOURED PICTORIAL COVER ADDRESSED BY PICTURE TO THE POSTMAN HIMSELF!; 21 Jan. 1895 env. (part flap lost & minor stains) with 1d lilac tied by fine 2-ring "LONDON" c.d.s. most unusually addressed; "MR. [watercolour half-length portrait of postman in uniform], A MAN OF Letters, G.P.O., S.E."!!The letter shows no signs of having been undelivered, so one assumes that the picture was a sufficiently good likeness for him to be identified. 1182 OUTGOING & INCOMING MISCELLANY inc. 1890 (22 March) env. from Z.A.R. to Birmingham franked with 6d adhesive but in second weight band (as denoted by '2' in red crayon) and thus charged 6d fine + 6d deficiency with fine "1S/-D/F.B." struck in London plus Birmingham arrival mark for 22 Apr., insufficiently prepaid postal stationery postcards from Belgium, Italy, Russia & Switzerland to England, 1900 env. from Ceylon to England correctly franked with (damaged) 6c adhesive tied by Kandy c.d.s. but redirected to Switzerland and thus bearing G.B. 2&Mac189;d adhesive tied by double ring Southampton c.d.s. and four others. 1183 VERY EARLY (1790) ENVELOPE CHARGED DOUBLE POSTAGE RATE; 1/2 Mar. 1790 env. (minor faults) from France (v. fine "RAON" on front) to London charged "2/8" (double postage via Calais), but then also redirected to Chichester and so charged "8" (double 4d rate) for the second journey. 1184 RARE NEWSPAPER BRANCH "MORE TO PAY" & "1d" IN CIRCLE MARKS ON COVER; 27/28 Apr. 1874 wrapper to Harpenden franked by &Mac189;d Plate No. (pl.5?) tied by "EC/8" numeral but endorsed "Stitched contrary to regulations" and so with very fine rare circular "MORE TO PAY/N.P.B/ABOVE [2] OZ" and matching "1d/N.P.B." marks.
