1008 CRASH & WRECK MAIL - KGVI COVER TO SWITZERLAND RECOVERED FROM S.S. 'BENLEDI'; Remarkable 16 Jan. 1948 env. registered from "VICTORIA/SEYCHELLES" (c.d.s.'s & boxed "R" mark) to Berne, sealed with London "RETURNED LETTER SECTION" label, having had all the KGVI stamps washed off, and so with long typed explanation and "BERN 1/BRIEFAUSRABE" cachet where the stamps had been; received in Bern on 31 March 1948. The letter was damaged by water during a fire on the ship that brought it from the Seychelles while in dock at Genoa. Wreck Mail from the Seychelles is very rare. Photo £140

1028 RARE EARLY MENTION OF THE "SEYS CHELLE ISLANDS" IN "INDIA LETTER/SWANAGE" TO G.B.; Remarkable 4 Dec. 1829 EL (some folds with hinges etc. & worn crease through address-panel, but intact) from "Mauritius" to Eton (Bucks.) with a 60% v. fine "[MAU]RITIUS/[PO]ST OFFICE" and m/s "1/2" arrival charge on the front, as well as a very fine rare boxed "INDIA LETTER/SWANAGE" (Rob.In.1; only recorded for 1830 - just crossed by the crease at left), having 21 Apr. 1830 London transit backstamp. Important contents (full typed transcript):- written and signed by the 'Blind Traveller', James Holman (1786-1857; see Dict. of Nat. Biography) who travelled round the world in 1827-32, publishing his story in 1834/5. "I am lately returned from a voyage through the Mozambique Channel, visiting the shore of Madagascar and the east coast of Africa, the Islands of Johannah and Mohileh [two of the Comoro Islands] located (?) to the northwest of the equinocial (?) line, after which to several of the Seys Chelle [sic] Islands, returning here 31st of Octr. [1829]..." Important early reference to the Seychelles by one of its earliest literary visitors and a rare letter from this author.
