842 MALTA - VERY RARE 'G.B. USED ABROAD' COVER TO THE "SEYCHELLES ISLANDS" ROUTED VIA MAURITIUS BARELY A FORTNIGHT AFTER THE FIRST SEYCHELLES P.O. OPENED; Exceptional 29 Nov. 1861 mourning env. (part flap lost and with edge wear, etc.) franked by a G.B. 4d rose (wing margin; slightly rubbed) tied by a partly fine "A"-code "MALTA/A25" duplex of 29 Nov. 1861; addressed to "Lieut. Henry Fairfax, R.N., H.M.S. Ariel, Seychelles Islands, via Suez", having a red crayon "6d" (?) on the front. [This ship was involved in anti-slavery operations around the Seychelles at this date.] There is a large part fine "MAURITIUS/C/DE 27/61" transit c.d.s. on the flap, beside another partial c.d.s. The latter could conceivably have been a "SEYCHELLES" datestamp, because the P.O. on the island had been opened with its first datestamp just 16 days before this letter passed through Mauritius! However, it is not known if ingoing mail was datestamped at Victoria as early as this. A wonderful destination for a Malta or G.B. 'Used Abroad' collector, and one of the earliest recorded ingoing Seychelles covers (earlier than any ingoing covers in the Weiss Collection). Possibly the earliest known cover to have been handled by the Seychelles P.O. that opened on 11 Dec. 1861. Important Exhibition Item. Photo £1500

(Mauritius?) on the part flap - presumably any Seychelles arrival c.d.s. was lost along with the removed flap. Scarce early ingoing cover by a named ship. Plus a c.1910 official (menu-card?) "C. des Mess. Maritimes" coloured PPC of Mahe. (2 items). Photo £150
