** 752 VERY RARE EARLY "NELSON" STRAIGHT-LINE MARK ON COVER TO G.B.; [Dec. 1842] E (minor wear to folds; unnecessarily reinforced with 'magic' sellotape that needs to be removed by the next owner) to Yorkshire endorsed "1/-" and "Paid" on the front (double NZ outgoing Ship Letter rate to GB) having a very fine small black "NELSON" mark (light fold) inverted on the front, with GB "1/4" (double incoming rate) charge on the front; there are also red London "SHIP LETTER" and 1 July 1843 arrival marks on the reverse. Research shows that this letter was carried by the brig 'Union' from Nelson to Sydney and then sent on from there to London in the barque 'Kinnear'. Very rare; few pre-1844 NZ town-marks are recorded and their use on outgoing overseas mail is exceptional. It is believed that only four other example of this mark have been recorded. 753 RARE BLUE BOXED "PAID AT/NEW PLYMOUTH" ON COVER WITH HAND-DRAWN ILLUSTRATIONS INSIDE; 19 Apr. 1852 EL (some stains, etc.; with masking tape reinforcing folds; needs to be removed a.s.a.p.) to GB with mostly very fine blue boxed "PAID AT/NEW PLYMOUTH" (rare colour) on the front matching the faint blue oval d.s. on the flap, prepaid "2" and charged "8"on arrival (26 Sept. London c.d.s.); the amusing contents (part typed transcript) include several caricature sketches of unusual characters (Maoris?) and local sights. Rare to find so early a pictorial item from NZ and a rare PAID mark. photo plate 14 £240
