LITERATURE - PHILATELIC
450 A DESCRIPTIVE PRICE LIST & CATALOGUE; 1865 Issue (lacking back cover and thread, two spike holes and other faults) "A descriptive Price List & Catalogue of British, Colonial & Foreign Postage Stamps, for sale by E. Stanley Gibbons, Foreign Postage Stamp Dealer, 15, Treville Street, Plymouth". The cover has evidence of having been stamped and there is a faint indecipherable date stamp; the list has been folded twice vertically. Despite the inevitable faults this is a scarce copy of the earliest know Stanley Gibbons catalogue. Ex Hiram Deats and Carl E Kane. Only two other copies of this issue are recorded, one in the Crawford Library the other in private hands ex the George T Turner collection. Despite the lack of the date "November 1865" on the cover James Negus in a long, thoroughly professional argument in the Philatelic Literature Review (2nd Quarter 2004) concludes that the best explanation at this stage is this copy is an uncorrected proof of the November 1865 edition. The rear cover has evidence of a 1d red and there is a part strike of a barred numeral hand stamp; the list has been folded twice vertically. A scarce example in such fine condition. Note by this date E. Stanley Gibbons was now Stanley, Gibbons and he described himself as an Importer; he also provided a "List of packets of Crests and Stamps". £250

The items appear to have been placed in the book in random order and inc. items originating from USA, France, Egypt, Japan, Ceylon, Hong Kong and Switzerland. There are several printed ships menus, postcards, entry passes inc. one for Mrs Gibbons to view the Egyptian antiquities. The majority of the items are stuck down and some damage is evident (one former owner allowed his children to play with the contents!).
