| 1653 | ORIGINAL POSTAL LETTER-BAG OF PIGSKIN FOR DOLGELLY HOUSE "BRYNTIRION"; c.1780 fine (though with understandable wear and patina) sewn pigskin envelope-shaped letter-bag with string applied to flap and signs of sealing wax on front, inscribed (in an 18th century hand) "BRYNTIRION" (comic faces within the "B" and "O"!) on the front, which was a 'seat' (i.e. large house) 3½ miles WNW of Dolgelly. It seems certain that this was that house's regular private mail-bag for letters sent out from Dolgelly P.O. (which was opened c.1780). Remarkable survival; the only comparable item that we can recall having seen was the much grander Victorian post-bag of "Dillington, Ilminster" sold by Cavendish as part of the Bernard Smith Collection in Oct. 1994 (for £286). Rare. PHOTO. | £100 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
