SMALL BLACK "PACKET LETTER"; Fine Mar./May 1839 EL from "St. Croix" (Danish West Indies) to Scotland charged "2/6" with a fine green boxed Falmouth "&Mac189;" mark on the front, matching the fine green "LEEWARD ISLAND/F" mark across the join on the reverse. Also on the front is a mostly very fine small black "PACKET LETTER" mark which we have no record of, and which we are inclined to think must be a modern bogus mark added to the cover by a devious (?!) collector. 1617 FALMOUTH - RARE USE OF GREEN UNDATED "BRAZIL/F" MARK ON COVER ADDRESSED TO LONDON: 1844 (Jan.-May) EL from Callao, Peru written by Sir John Toup Nicolas, the captain of H.M.S. 'Vindictive' stated to be 'At Callao protecting British interests on the Coast of Peru, another revolution being daily expected' addressed to London charged '2/9' with green "BRAZIL/F" mark and interesting contents also referring to Hawaii, Tahiti, the seizure of the Society Islands by the French and the arrest & expulsion of the British Consul. The "F" marks were very rarely used on mail to or through London. £150

BLUE OVAL "SHIP LETTER/LEITH" DATESTAMP: 1829/36 Pair to Aberdeen and Edinburgh respectively with very fine boxed "LERWICK/778-E" marks and Feb./March, 1838 EL also ex Lerwick (fair boxed mileage mark) to Edinburgh endorsed in m/s 'p. Norna' (?) charged '8' (coastal steamer rate) and then '9' (to include Edinburgh 1d post) with mainly very fine blue oval "SHIP LETTER/LEITH" d.s. for 19 March well placed on the front. 1653 ORIGINAL POSTAL LETTER-BAG OF PIGSKIN FOR DOLGELLY HOUSE "BRYNTIRION"; c.1780 fine (though with understandable wear and patina) sewn pigskin envelope-shaped letter-bag with string applied to flap and signs of sealing wax on front, inscribed (in an 18th century hand) "BRYNTIRION" (comic faces within the "B" and "O"!) on the front, which was a 'seat' (i.e. large house) 3½ miles WNW of Dolgelly. It seems certain that this was that house's regular private mail-bag for letters sent out from Dolgelly P.O. (which was opened c.1780). Remarkable survival; the only comparable item that we can recall having seen was the much grander Victorian post-bag of "Dillington, Ilminster" sold by Cavendish as part of the Bernard Smith Collection in Oct. 1994 (for £286). 1654 RARE "MST.-TO-BANGOR/R.P.O. UP-MAIL" MARK ON COVER; 7-9 July 1856 EL from "BLACKPOOL" to "Bradford, Wilts." with 1d red (crease) tied by unclear numeral, having a very fine strike of this extremely rare Travelling Post Office Missent mark (crease) nicely placed on the front.
