Paid" mark - and scarce local m/s "1" of Southampton on coach-builder's headed invoice!), rare 11 Jan. 1840 EL (2nd Day of Uniform Penny Postage) with "Brewer St./1 py P Paid" in red (crease; local London) but redirected with black manuscript "2" (the rare early 1840 P.O. error for the correct 1d redirection rate that should have applied), 16 Jan. 1840 Southampton handstruck "1" in red (early date), etc. Good lot. 1584 RARE EARLY COVER FROM "CHESWICK" (NORTHUMBERLAND?) TO WARWICK CASTLE; 12 Feb. 1634 (1635?) EL from "Cheswick" (presumably the small village in Northumberland 4 miles SE of Berwick, unless an old spelling of Chiswick, London; further research into the writer, "Will. Walker", could clarify) addressed "To my dear and loveing Sonn Mr. Joseph Hawksworth at Warwick Castle or elswhere", carried by private means and seeking news of the addressee, giving him news of some rent owed to him. 1585 RARE EARLY "9d" POSTAL RATE ON 1630s COVER FROM VENICE TO LONDON; Remarkable and fine 21 Dec. 1635 - 6 Feb. 1636 EL (minor dusting, but with fine red wax seal) from Venice (written in English "In Vene[zi]a" + "Laus deo Vene[zi]a") addressed "To Mr. Richard Robins, Merchantt in London" with a clear black manuscript "9d" arrival charge on the front. This 9d postal rate was current for single letters from Venice to London from 1626 until c.1640, but we cannot recall having seen any examples before. Any overseas postal rates prior to 1650 are very rare; the famous "Brandreth" covers with "4d" charges of 1632 are similar, but have not been on the market for almost 30 years. With good references to postal communications - "Sir, These 2 ordinaryes wee have not re[ceive]d any letters from Eng[lan]d..." - and commodities/deals in lead, pilchards, saffron, etc. Important Exhibition Item. 1586 GRAPE STATIONER - EARLY MANUSCRIPT "Grape" R.H. NAME ON DOCKWRA COVER; 16 Nov. 1764 E to a house \facing ye White Hart near Wardour Street in Oxford Road" with a partly fine "G/WE" General Office Govt. 'Dockwra'-type mark (crease) on the flap beside the manuscript name - "Grape" - of the proprietor of the Receiving House where it was posted. Thomas Grape was a stationer in Gracechurch St. in the city, who sold all kinds of paper, 'pens', 'ink powder', etc. His 2-ring "GRAPE/STATIONER" handstamp (Jay L384) has been recorded 1769-73. 1587 FANCY "B" INSPECTOR's MARK ON 1d BLACK COVER EX LONDON CHARING CROSS; 29 Dec. 1840 EL (flap faults barely detract) from London to Southampton with 1d Black (3 good to wide margins; filing crease) tied by orange-red Maltese Cross matching the fine Maltese-Cross-shaped "C+" d.s. of Charing Cross Branch P.O. on the flap, along with a further matching orange-red "B" mark that may indicate an early time of posting in the morning.
