1165 RARE "REGISTRATION LABELS NOT YET SUPPLIED" LABEL ON COMPLETE COVER FROM SCOTLAND; Remarkable and fine 21 Feb. 1907 env. regd. from Leith to London franked by KEVII 1d reds (3) tied by fair "GREAT JUNCTION ST./LEITH" c.d.s.'s clearly dated for 21 Feb., having a plain blue "R" in oval perf. label on the front cancelled by the same c.d.s., but also having a very rare long black printed "REGISTRATION LABELS/NOT YET SUPPLIED" label (wrapped round edge) on the front. The labels were supposed to be available from 18 Feb. 1907 (and at least two First Day examples are known), but many P.O.'s did not receive their first named supplies in time, so a 19 Feb. 1907 P.O. Circular instructed such P.O.'s to mark letters "Labels not yet supplied". At least one Glasgow office used a handstamp, but only this Leith sub-office and Stranraer are recorded as having used specially printed labels. There was no cover with this label in the otherwise comprehensive 'Vivien Sussex' Collection. Important Registered Mail Rarity. Photo £300

1175 KEVII POSTAL STATIONERY - VERY RARE 'LAWSON'S PATENT' MULTIPLE ADVERTISING CARD; 1907 usage of the very rare KEVII 1d red enclosure-card from the stamped-to-order combination wrapper/enclosure card (see Huggins, p.94, footnote to WS8b), with an apparently unrecorded group of varied adverts back-and-front for various Dublin businesses, with one inviting readers to visit a stand at the "IRISH INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION" (which took place in 1907). The 1d imprinted stamp (cleverly printed on a separate flap of the double folded card so that it originally protruded outside the outer wrapper (which is no longer present) has bars of a (presumably Dublin) cancellation machine. Only a handful of examples of this short-lived style of Postal Stationery (arguably the rarest of all used KEVII GB types) have been recorded. Important Exhibition Item. Photo £240

1178 ROUND-THE-WORLD POSTCARDS - VIA SUDAN, NIGERIA, OR NEW ZEALAND; 1906/10 PC's (4) all initially posted from GB with a single KEVII 1d, but deliberately redirected via differing routes to go round the globe; one succeeded via Mexico, NZ & Sudan (the NZ stamps removed en route to give space for the final readdressing!), one failed in USA after travels by Nigeria, Russia et al, and two failed with a single readdressing via NZ because the San Francisco route was no longer available. 1180 AUSTRALIA - 1st DAY OF THE 1d RATE COVER PRIOR TO IMPERIAL PENNY POST SYSTEM; 1 April 1905 env. (minor toning & flap lost, but with contents ref. the new 1d rate) to "Wagga Wagga, Australia" with GB KEVII 1d tied by "[HENL]EY S.O./SURREY" c.d.s. (clear date), having Wagga Wagga c.d.s. and matching "UNCLAIMED" on the front along with red boxed "UNCLAIMED" (matching the Sydney Dead Letter Office c.d.s. on the reverse). Rare thus; this was the First Day that the 1d rate finally applied to mail to Australia, though letters going the other way were still not reduced to the 1d rate until 1 May 1911. Few known. Plus Feb. 1907 'Reginald Bray' PPC to Rotterdam with the autograph of "Cornel is Sparling" (the hero of the day who was in charge of rescuing some of the SS Berlin's passengers) on the address side as requested by this eccentric autograph-hunter. (usual stains do not detract) to Christchurch (NZ) franked by GB KEVII 1d (crease) tied by partial Weston Super Mare c.d.s. with superb red "DAMAGED IN WRECK/OF S.S. AEON." mark on the front, with 8 Oct. Christchurch arrival marks on reverse. 1195 U.S.A. - 2s-1d RATE COVER FROM SCOTLAND WITH FAILED U.S. 'SPECIAL DELIVERY' STAMP; 12 June 1903 commercial usage of the long QV s.t.o. 3d red P. Stat. env. to New York "Per S.S. Campania" uprated with GB KEVII 1d|+3d+6d+1/- plus a US 10c Blue "SPECIAL DELIVERY" Stamp all tied by Dunfermline c.d.s.'s - the US 10c mostly tied by an oval "NEW YORK/PO" mark struck on arrival. This prepayment of Express Delivery in the US was specifically allowed for in US PO regulations, but in this case it failed; there is a v. fine red "OFFERED AT ADDRESS/[date]/CAUSE OF NON-DELIVERY/[Closed]" on the front. There is a printed US PO explanatory label (now removed from the reverse for display) ref. the 10c stamp only covering one attempt at Express delivery!
