'The fleet is at last arrived, and the Troops, who are to return to England, will embark about ten days hence....I am afraid it will be December before I can reach Winchester, it being a long Voyage, six Wks is reckoned a good passage.' 589 FALMOUTH - GREEN "BRAZIL/F" DATESTAMP ON COVER EX URUGUAY DESCRIBING A NAVAL ENGAGEMENT: 1827/8 EL from Montevideo via Rio de Janeiro and Falmouth to Coldstream (redirected to Edinburgh) charged '4/5' bearing a fine (albeit partially overstruck) "BRAZIL/FE 24/1828/F" d.s. in green with intriguing contents consisting of a first hand account of an action by H.M.S. 'Cadamus' against a privateer in the River Plate inc. 'A vessel unexpectedly fired a shot close to us, and by the time we got all sail in, and guns ready, two others. We accordingly gave her a dozen from one side, when she tried to escape, but we made sail after her, and came up, and when Capt. Thompson hailed her, she fired two volleys of musketry. (i.e. double rate) with a fine "AV/9" London transit Bishop mark on the flap but with no trace of any Edinburgh Bishop mark. It is possible that this letter was posted on the last day before the introduction of the Scottish Bishop mark which, according to Auckland & Stables, was first used on 5 Aug., 1693. £60
