NAPOLEONIC INVASION OF BRITAIN: 1797 EL (sellotape stains) from Portsmouth to Lunga Island (Scotland) concerning recent Naval action, with rare mention of our inveterate foes the French having ...formed the plan of invading the Country at three points at once...from the Zeal to make a landing on the Eastern Coast while similar armaments from Havre and Brest were to make a landing on the western coast of England & Ireland. Also a rare 4pp m/s list (toning, closed tears) of American & French Naval prizes taken off the American coast by Admiral Murray's squadron in 1794-95. In addition, an 8pp 1805 printed military pay-list and reproduction newspaper reports concerning Trafalgar & Waterloo. (7 items).

CRIMEAN WAR - LETTER TO UK DESCRIBING CELEBRATIONS ON LAST DAY OF HOSTILITIES: 1856 (29.Feb) 4pp Officer's EL in env. addressed to Cornwall (m/s '3' charge) from Camp Sebastopol: I have ridden this morning to see the Armistice signed at Tractir Bridge...it was quite a holiday down there, officers of all nations & Frenchies of each service.The Ruskie general came up with an escort of Cossacks and...signed the armistice and Windham did on our side...last Saturday a man of the 77th was hung for plunder, 2,000 o f each Division was paraded to see it..and much more detail. MUCH TRAVELLED CONCESSIONARY RATE COVER ADDRESSED TO A SOLDIER SERVING IN INDIA: 1864 (19 September) opened out env. prepaid at 1d Inland Rate from Naas to the Curragh Camp thence redirected to Calcutta. The datestamps show travel via Bombay, Calcutta & Bangalore. Unclaimed and eventually redirected to the Depot, 10th Regiment of Foot (the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment) in England via Madras to Preston where it was finally forwarded to Chatham where it presumably found Private Farlow in May 1865! Minor toning & some edge wear but a good example of a much travelled cover sent at the 1d Sailors & Soldiers Concessionary rate.Photo

'Hawke' at Malta franked with a Maltese 1d carmine adhesive prepaying the 1d concessionary rate cancelled by Valletta c.d.s. and authorised by the commanding officer, 1905 PPC ex a rifleman of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps at Candia, Crete to Nottingham franked with 2 x 5l green Cretian adhesives tied by Heraklion c.d.s. and also bearing a partial strike of the violet oval "HEADQUARTERS/(date)/CRETE" cachet, two 1911/12 envs. (one with faults) ex Portsmouth endorsed in m/s 'Via Siberia' addressed to a naval lieutenant on 'H.M .S. MOHMAND FIELD FORCE, 1908: May 6th 1908 crested envelope (part flap removed due to rough opening) of the 5th Regiment of Foot sent through FPO 68, Sea Post Office Bombay-Aden (9/5/08) & London (22/5/08) to Farnham Hall, Norwich bearing Indian KEVII 1a adhesive (light surface scuffing) tied by large "F.P.O./No.68/6 MY 08" d.s. Note: Encouraged by the Zakka Khal rebellion in the Bazar Valley, the Mohmands began a series of raids along the border and were incited by their Mullahs into a large scale "Jihad" in April 1908. A Field Force formed at Peshawar in April 1908 with operations successfully concluded by the end of May when the Force (including First Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, First Battalion Seaforth Highlanders & First Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers) was disbanded.
