MUCH TRAVELLED CONCESSIONARY RATE COVER ADDRESSED TO A SOLDIER SERVING IN INDIA: 1864 (19 September) opened out env. prepaid at 1d Inland Rate from Naas to the Curragh Camp thence redirected to Calcutta. The datestamps show travel via Bombay, Calcutta & Bangalore. Unclaimed and eventually redirected to the Depot, 10th Regiment of Foot (the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment) in England via Madras to Preston where it was finally forwarded to Chatham where it presumably found Private Farlow in May 1865! Minor toning & some edge wear but a good example of a much travelled cover sent at the 1d Sailors & Soldiers Concessionary rate.Photo |

MOHMAND FIELD FORCE, 1908: May 6th 1908 crested envelope (part flap removed due to rough opening) of the 5th Regiment of Foot sent through FPO 68, Sea Post Office Bombay-Aden (9/5/08) & London (22/5/08) to Farnham Hall, Norwich bearing Indian KEVII 1a adhesive (light surface scuffing) tied by large "F.P.O./No.68/6 MY 08" d.s. Note: Encouraged by the Zakka Khal rebellion in the Bazar Valley, the Mohmands began a series of raids along the border and were incited by their Mullahs into a large scale "Jihad" in April 1908. A Field Force formed at Peshawar in April 1908 with operations successfully concluded by the end of May when the Force (including First Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, First Battalion Seaforth Highlanders & First Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers) was disbanded.
