THE UNIQUE STONE 3 AND SINGAPORE 8c COMBINATION COVER: 1880 (31 Jan) env. from Sarawak via Singapore to Germany franked with Sarawak Stone 3 3c tied by oval "SARAWAK/13 JA 80/POST OFFICE" d.s. and Straits Settlements 1867 8c yellow with circular grid cancellation, "SINGAPORE/PAID" transit c.d.s. and German arrival c.d.s. on reverse. The top flap is missing and 8c with perforation faults. The 11c postage represents the oz rate. Prior to Sarawak's entry into the UPU in 1897 Sarawak stamps were valid only to Singapore, and Straits Settlemnts adhesives were needed for any destination beyond. This cover is believed to be the only example of a Stone 3 3c on cover and the only recorded example of the double oval used as a cancellation. RPS Cert. (2000). Photo |
