| 540 | 1st OPIUM WAR - LETTER FROM BRITISH MERCHANT SENT BY THE SHIP ON WHICH HE TOOK REFUGE; 26 Feb. 1840 EL from "Macao" to Greenock endorsed "P. Carnatic" with a mostly very fine boxed "GREENOCK/SHIP LETTER" d.s. on the front, charged "8"; scarce port for mail from China. The interesting contents refer to ongoing problems with the Opium trade and include; "The ship by which I now write, the 'Carnatic', was my home when we were expelled from Toonkoo Macao in August last." He criticises the American negotiator; "What think you of Mr. King's much admired friend, the Commissioner, threatening to exterminate us all; men, women & children?!" Historical letter from the brief peace between the Chinese expulsion of the merchants and the outbreak of hostilities. Photo | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 541 | 1st OPIUM WAR - LETTER FROM BRITISH MERCHANT SENT DURING THE NAVAL BUILD-UP TO THE START OF HOSTILITIES; Fine March 1840 EL from "Macao" to Edinburgh (same writer as previous & following lots) endorsed "P. [Ship] Susan" with a fine blue boxed step-type "LEITH/SHIP LETTER" (scarce on Far East mail) on the front, matching the 31 Aug. arrival c.d.s. on the top flap. The letter refers to tea sent along with the same ship, but then describes the volatile situation in Macao; "My own impression is that we shall be allowed to remain quietly in Macao till actual hostilities commence; for the presence of the 'Druid' of 46 guns, together with his old friends the 'Volage' & 'Plymouth' will certainly make the Viceroy hesitate...[but] I do hope & believe that ere six weeks we shall have such force here as will shew the Chinese that the day is gone by when they can maltreat Foreigners as they please with impunity. I hope this Force will be prepared to act at once & to strike a blow as will be felt throughout the length & breadth of the Empire, & will teach the Emperor & all his vainglorious Mandarins the hollowness & rottenness of the strength in which they put their trust. China is indeed about to be opened; opened to the Commerce, learning & religion of the Western World....the future I trust will amply repay us." Prophetic and important comments from the epicentre of the troubles that started the War. Photo | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

SENT VIA FRANCE; 3/5 June 1840 EL from "Macao" to Edinburgh (same writer as previous lots) endorsed "v Marseilles" and [in a second hand] "p. (14 Nov.). Scarce routing from Macao. The letter refers to the continuing stand-off between the British and the Chinese, and the death of the British force's senior naval Captain; "...Lord John Churchill's death; he was buried this morning...We are all in the dark as to the extent of the coming force, the time when we may expect it, & what is intended to be done." Rare letter from this period in the conflict. Photo | £240 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 543 | 1st OPIUM WAR - IMPORTANT EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE SURRENDER & DESTRUCTION OF THE BOGUE FORTS; 19 Mar. 1841 EL (8 pages; from the same British merchant as the previous 1840 letters) from "Macao" to Liverpool "p. [Ship] Parrockhall" charged "1/4" with a very fine boxed "INDIA LETTER/ PORTSMOUTH" on the front, having London/Lpool d.s.'s (both 30 Aug.) on the top flap. The long and fascinating letter describes the chaotic state of trade (Macao smuggling, etc.) during the ongoing battle for control of the Chinese coast and trade. The writer has just returned from a tour of the Pearl River where he watched the military/naval operations: "But who will be fool enough to build in Hong Kong on the faith that it will be kept after Elliot has shown himself such a vacillating & uncertain being?....The first ten days of this month I spent in making an excursion to Whampoa...We had a splendid view of the Bogue forts and saw one of the largest of them blown up...our brave countrymen [are] keeping guard in Wantung which is now an English Garrison...I found a whole fleet of Men of War & transports full of US coats, & all were on the qui vive for Canton on the following morning, but their evil genius the Plenipo[tentiary] interposed; during the night a Chop had been received, & many a curse was directed to the dirty white flag that appeared at the fore of H.M.S. Calliope at early dawn on the morrow. The Quong Chow Foo, or Mayor, of Canton had promised to come on board in the afternoon...I had the good fortune to see his excellency received on deck...I had the pleasure...of being present at the Capture of a Chinese fort...Napier's Fort..." A marvellous letter full of further details of the British successes around Canton and the delaying tactics of the Chinese, etc. Rare eye-witness account of the peak of the conflict from an articulate and well-connected merchant bystander. [From the same correspondence as the previous three lots, all of which were recently discovered by a Cavendish describer in a mixed collection.] Photo | £1000 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
