464 THE 1895-96 CAMPAIGN - CARD WRITTEN DURING PREPARATIONS TO MARCH TO KUMASSI; 17 Dec. 1895 usage of the Gold Coast 1d red P. Stat. PC from "Cape Coast Castle" to G.B. cancelled in transit with a very fine 2-ring "PAQUEBOT/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. (6 Jan. 1896). The writer is in charge of organising stores for the advance 'up country':- "...[am] organising the 10,000 Carriers required for the Expedition - to carry the stores...the Mails are few and irregular." This successful Expedition lasted from 11 Nov. 1895 until 8 Feb. 1896 and brought King Prempeh back from Kumassi without a shot being fired. Attractive and rare thus. 465 THE 1895-96 CAMPAIGN - O.A.S. USAGE OF THE 1d RED CARD FROM "KIVISA, ADANSI" TO G.B.; 7 Jan. 1896 usage of the Gold Coast 1d red P. Stat. PC (vertical crease & minor wear but attractive) headed from "c/o Ashanti Expedition, Kivisa, Adansi, Ashanti" to Ireland cancelled by a very fine 2-ring "PAQUEBOT/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. (6 Feb.) Written during the advance on Kumassi with interesting contents: "Have been here for a couple of days, but probably go on tomorrow...will write from Kumassi; will get there probably 16th or 18th. Exp[editionar]y. Force, W[est]. C[oast]. of Africa" to London cancelled by a mostly fine 2-ring "PAQUEBOT/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. (6 Feb.). The brief message ends; "It is most probable that all Officers O[rdnance]. S[taff]. C[orps]. will be home again by ned of Feb. or early March". A sound prediction! PHOTO. £150
467 THE 1895-96 CAMPAIGN - O.A.S. "ASHANTI EXPEDITION. NO STAMPS." COVER WITH CRITICAL COMMENTS; 29 Jan. 1896 stampless env. to GB endorsed "Ashanti Expedition. No Stamps." at top and signed & dated at lower left, with v. fine London "2‡D/F.B." arrival charge on the front and London c.d.s. (26 Feb.) on reverse. Complete with interesting contents (part typed transcript) headed "Tobiassi, 8 miles north of the Prah":- "To say that we are utterly disgusted...gives no adequate idea of our feelings...utter slackness and failure to act on the part of the old woman [Sir Francis Scott] who commanded the Expedition...what's the use with the nation left unconquered and no fight...". 468 THE 1895-96 CAMPAIGN - O.A.S. "ASHANTI EXPEDITION. NO STAMPS." COVER TO G.B.; c.15 Jan. 1896 env. to GB (same correspondence as previous lot) headed "Ashanti Expedition. No Stamps" and signed at lower left by the writer, having v. fine black "LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. (13 Feb.) on the flap and ,matching "2D/466" charge-mark on the front. Sadly the contents have not survived, but clearly written from the Kumassi area when King Prempeh was being captured. Rare. Photo plate 11 £300
469 NORTHERN TERRITORIES CAMPAIGN - OFFICER's CARD FROM "GAMBAGA" TO G.B.; 11 June 1898 usage of the outward 1d red reply card (creases and toning but complete) from Capt. Giffard at "Gambaga" (near the Upper Volta River NE Northern Terr.) to Walton on Thames cancelled by a fine 2-ring "KUMASI/GOLD COAST" c.d.s. (6 July; the wear to the card probably caused by the month's delay in reaching the P.O.) with a second v. fine strike alongside and a v. fine red "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. (17 Aug.). The message is brief and to the point: "No time to write. Well but busy - no news. Billy". [Ex Ashanti.] PHOTO. £240
470 NORTHERN TERRITORIES CAMPAIGN - RARE PURPLE "NORTHERN TERRITORIES/GOLD COAST." D.S. ON INTERNAL MAIL; Attractive 19 Dec. 1898 front to Cape Coast endorsed "No stamps available" with a very fine strike of the rare purple "NORTHERN TERRITORIES/GOLD COAST./19 DEC. 1898" mark along with superb "T" in circle matching a v. fine 2-ring "KUMASI/·GOLD COAST·" c.d.s. 471 THE SIEGE OF KUMASSI - RARE COVER POSTED ON THE DAY IT WAS RELIEVED; 15 July 1900 stampless env. to G.B. endorsed "Ashanti Field Force" and "O.A.S. No Stamps available" with mostly v. fine "KUMASI/GOLD COAST" c.d.s. and "T" mark as well as Plymouth "1D/620" charge-mark on the front; there is a Cape Coast c.d.s. (27 July) on the reverse and a Liverpool arrival c.d.s. (17 Aug.) on the front. Very rare; with p. copy of 1946 note from the man who postmarked the letter, and who states that there were less than 6 covers sent from Kumassi on that day, the day on which besieged Kumassi was finally relieved. 472 THE SIEGE OF KUMASSI - RARE COVER POSTED ON THE DAY IT WAS RELIEVED; 15 July 1900 stampless env. (toned) to G.B. endorsed "Ashanti Field Force. No stamps. O.A.S." with a mostly v. fine "KUMASI/GOLD COAST" c.d.s. (15 July; the day the siege was finally lifted), "T" mark and v. fine Plymouth "1D/620" charge-mark, having a mostly v. fine Cape Coast c.d.s. (13 Aug.) and v. fine Hythe arrival c.d.s. (31 Aug.) on the reverse. Rare thus; with signed 1946 letter from the addressee's son and writer of the original letter, who states that; "I entered the Post Office, which was in confusion and assembled the date stamp, except the year date '1900' which could not be found. I postmarked the first small consignment of letters sent down to the coast & these could not have exceeded half a dozen." 473 KUMASSI GARRISON MAIL - RARE USAGE OF HALF G.B. "LETTER-CARD" AS A POSTCARD, ENDORSED "O.A.S., ASHANTI F[IE]LD F[OR]CE"; Extraordinary 20 Dec. 1900 usage of the front half of a GB 1d red on blue P. Stat. letter-card from "Kumasi" to Cornwall, with fine "CAPE COAST/GOLD COAST" transit c.d.s. (28 Dec.) on the front, and endorsed "On ACtive Service, Ashanti Fld. Fce., no stamps" on the front with the word "LETTER" of the "LETTER CARD" inscription over-written "POST". There is a faint red "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. (18 Jan. 1901) on the front. The message explains the half card; "This letter card became gummed together so excuse the [writing] material. I reached this spot after an 8 days march from Cape Coast...This is a very disappointing place; filthy, smelly, smaller than I expected.
