(19 Sept.) on the front, along with superb black handstruck "d6" mark of Liverpool (there is a v. fine matching "LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. on the flap) and small Bristol "CH" in circle. Sacher only records five covers with this mark, which had a shorter period of use than the Paid mark, and which was only used on unpaid mail. Exhibition Item. [Ex Colin McCaig.] PHOTO. £750
VERY RARE FANCY 2-RING "CAPE-COAST-CASTLE/PAID/*" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO IRELAND VIA LIVERPOOL; 8(?) Apr. 1864 env. (flap partly lost; faults along top, etc.) to "New bridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland" endorsed "via Liverpool" with a small reed manuscript "5" at top right and having a poor but readily recognisable red 2-ring "CAPE-COAST-CASTLE/PAID/*" d.s. on the front partly overstruck by a v. fine red "PAID/ LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. Very rare; Sacher only records 3 examples including this one. Photo £500
THE VERY RARE LARGE RED DOUBLE-ARC "ACCRA/PAID" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO SIERRA LEONE; Attractive and clean 12 May 1864 env. to "Government House, Sierra Leone" (mostly fine black 20 May arrival c.d.s. on flap) signed "W.C. Africa" (Bishop of Africa?) on the front, endorsed "Paid" with red crayon "4" and mostly fine large red "ACCRA/PAID/[MY] 12/1[86]4" c.d.s. nicely placed on the front. Doubly rare cover; this is the only recorded example of this mark in red (Sacher only records one other example - struck in purple on 1862 cover to GB) and it is probably the earliest recorded 4d-rate inter-Colonial cover from Gold Coast. Important Exhibition Item. [Ex Colin McCaig.] Photo £1500
CAPE COAST CASTLE - BLACK C.D.S. ON PREPAID COVER IN INTERIM PERIOD BETWEEN USE OF DIFFERENT "PAID" MARKS; 17 Dec. 1869 env. (small tear in front, clear of all marks and address, barely detracts) to Edinburgh with red crayon "6" and unusually very fine small encircled "CAPE·COAST CASTLE/A" c.d.s. on the front adjoining v. fine "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. (14 Jan. 1870) with further poor strikes of both marks alongside. From 1869 to late 1871 Sacher only records prepaid covers with this c.d.s. alone and with no "PAID" marks; it seems that it took a while to replace the rarely legible and little-used fancy 2-ring type (1864-8; see above) with smaller 2-ring type (1871-5). Rare and attractive. Photo £240
Similar lot from same correspondence but with red manuscript "5" marking; 3 June 1871 env. to Edinburgh with v. fine strikes of both "CAPE·COAST·CASTLE" & Liverpool c.d.s.'s, but with red ink "5" Accountancy marking. Clean and attractive. Photo £240
NAVAL OFFICER's COVER EX "JELLAH COFFEE" TO G.B. FRANKED BY G.B. 6d MAUVE; 2 Oct. 1871 env. (flap lost & minor edge wear) with contents ("H.M.S. SEAGULL" motif printed at top) from the Druitt correspondence to London franked by GB 6d mauve tied by v. fine Liverpool "466" numeral struck in transit with v. fine red "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" c.d.s. on the front. The letter is brief but includes; "we shall be going down south before long". Presumably the ship was on anti-Slaver duty along the west Africa coast. Rare place of origin and an unusual GB Naval Officer's 6d-Rate cover. Photo £200
NAVAL OFFICER's COVER EX "CAPE COAST CASTLE" TO G.B. FRANKED BY G.B. 6d MAUVE; 30 Dec. 1871 - 3 Jan. 1872 env. (minor edge wear + ink-mark at foot) from same correspondence as previous lot, to London, franked by GB 6d mauve tied by v. fine "466" numeral with fine red "PAID/BR. PACKET/LIVERPOOL" c.d.s. (26 Jan.) on the front. The long and interesting contents (headed with printed "H.M.S. SEAGULL" motif are very derogatory about the ship's Captain, refer to their "letting two slavers [= slave-ships] go...very annoying as if any of us had had our own way they would not have got away...", referring to the Captain's pet monkey, and thanking the addressee "for sending...the stamps". Rare reference to the way ships' officers obtained their GB stamps while abroad. Rare thus. Photo £180
NAVAL OFFICER's COVER EX "CAPE COAST CASTLE" TO G.B. FRANKED BY G.B. 6d MAUVE; 17/23 Mar. 1872 env. (some edge wear) to London franked by G.B. 6d tied by fine London oval barred "P" cancel with 23 Apr. London arrival c.d.s.'s on reverse. With long and interesting contents on "H.M.S. SEAGULL" headed paper ref. life on board ship, their drunkard Captain, and the news that the population of Elmina is trying to avoid their administration being handed over by the Dutch (who cannot keep order) to the British very soon. Rare thus. Photo £200
THE RARE 2nd-TYPE "ACCRA/PAID" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO G.B.; Fine 25 Sept. 1872 env. to Edinburgh with a red crayon "6" and v. fine (though overstruck by arrival c.d.s.) small red encircled "ACCRA/B/PAID" datestamp alongside, having a very fine red "PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" transit c.d.s. (19 Oct.) nearby. Very few examples recorded; Sacher lists only three (but not this cover) and notes that only about six are known in all. Important Exhibition Item. [Ex Colin McCaig.] Photo £500
THE 2-RING "PAID·AT·CAPE·COAST·CASTLE/+" DATESTAMP ON COVER TO G.B. WITH CANCELLED RED "5" MARK; 12 Jan. 1875 env. (minor wrinkling & closed tear) to Edinburgh with v. fine red encircled Paid mark on the front with partly fine red Liverpool transit c.d.s. (5 Feb.) and a large red crayon "5" rate mark crossed out in black ink (why?!). Rare thus. Photo £300
Similar 2 Nov. 1872 env. to the same Edinburgh address (deleted file notes slightly affect address-panel) with partly fine red 2-ring "PAID·AT·CAPE·COAST·CASTLE" c.d.s. on the front with red crayon "5" and "1" marks and v. fine red "LONDON/PAID" transit c.d.s. (23 Aug.). Unusual not being routed via Liverpool.Photo £200
Similar 23 Dec. 1872 env. to the same address (worn and grubby) having a mostly very fine strike of the 2-ring Paid mark, but having two separate red crayon "3" accountancy marks on the front. PHOTO. £150
