66 LOW COUNTRIES, 1684-96: Trio of letters to Myn Heer van Weede...President van Staten van Uytrecht...Haga (or variants) - i.e. president of the regional assembly and representative to the States General of the Low Countries; two are written in Dutch and have fine armorial seals in wax or blind embossing, the earlier with red crayon '3' postal rate; the third (1696) is more impressive with a lengthy address and Royal seal - written from 'C–llne' [Cologne] in a mixture of German and French, apparently referring to matters concerning the War of the Grand Alliance, mentioning the cost of soldiers and referring to Spain. 78 EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE FALL OF GENOA DURING THE FINAL PART OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS, ETC.; 1796 EL written "Off the Isle of Wight" from a departing ship's Captain with General Dundas on board with near fine concave "PORTSMOUTH" to Scotland, 1814 EL from Genoa to Taunton (redirected to Sidmouth) with mostly v. fine oval crowned "SHIP-LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" with detailed eye-witness account of the capture of Genoa ("The whole of the casualTies of this Amy...was 57 men of which about 15 were killed..."), Sept. 1837 EL from Santiago to London carried by the last pre-P.O. Contract voyage of the 'Braganza', and prepaid Feb. 1840 EL from London to the "Scinde Reserve Force, Carachee" via Bombay. Good variety. (4 covers). £200
79 RARE "TITANIC" HANDSTAMP IN PURPLE ON MARCH 1912 COVER EX FRANCE TO THE U.S.A.: 1912 (5 March) cover ex Paris to Washington D.C. bearing 5c & 10c (2) Sower adhesives and with large s/l "TITANIC" h.s. in purple alongside boxed "RECEIVED/MAR 19 1912" cachet. The French Postal service allocated covers prior to departure and they were stamped with the name of the ship on which they were supposed to travel. Due to the delay of the maiden voyage of the "Titanic" the cover was allocated to another vessel. Only four examples of this mark have been recorded. Historical Note: The "Titanic" finally sailed - fatally - on 10th April 1912 and sank with the loss of over 1,500 lives on 15th April. Photo £2500
80 MEXICO - PACKET LETTER TO LONDON BLOWN OFF COURSE AND SENT (OVERCHARGED!) VIA IRELAND: 1831 (4 April) E from Vera Cruz 'p. Packet/Eclipse' addressed to London having a fine red DUBLIN d.s. for 19 May on the top flap because this ship was blown off course to Ireland where it landed its mail. The very fine dotted-frame "Oz at 12s/- per Oz" mark (which matches the London Foreign Branch 23 May h.s.) was cancelled and a '2 oz. £1-6-8' charge inserted by hand. Note: The 2 x 12/- rate should have applied but an extra 2s/8d was charged in error for the Irish Sea Packet rate plus the Menai & Conway Bridges charges. Photo £600
