| 1446 | EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY LETTER APPARENTLY WITH A POSTAL CHARGE ENDORSEMENT; 30 June 1513 EL (faults along top edge of address-panel but attractive) addressed to "Dno. Rafaello de Medici In Anversa" with a fine merchant's Guild Mark and a rare 'postal' endorsement - partiti per voi soldi" ("Paid for you, 1 soldi") beside the address. This may be the earliest recorded British postal rate of any kind; in the RL 'Medici' catalogue of 27 June 1985 this cover (lot 1017; sold for 3,600 Swiss Francs - the second highest price of the whole Medici auction) was described as from "Giovanni Cavalcanti in Londra [La.]", and so it would be earlier than any other postal rate that we have recorded, predating the whole Corsini correspondence by over 50 years. It may be that the rate was connected to the recently started Merchant Strangers Post. [The matching cover (a duplicate of this but sent the next day) was one of the star items in the late Michael Jackson's Large Gold Medal collection of Early letters. Important Exhibition Item.] PHOTO. | £1500 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 1499 | ABUSE OF THE FRANKING SYSTEM - ORNATE RED CROWNED "IMPROPERLY PUT UNDER COVER TO EVADE/ POSTAGE/TO BE CHARGED" MARK ON 1826 EL FROM RATHDRUM: 1826 (2 Sept.) EL ex "Rathdrum Knot" with a good strike of the fancy "(Crown)/IMPROPERLY PUT UNDER COVER TO EVADE POSTAGE TO BE CHARGED" mark in red. Light vertical creases barely detract from this rare and extremely attractive item. Note: Due to the high cost of postage some people concealed letters inside a newspaper and sent them to a friend in Dublin who then posted them in the Penny Post. Few were caught and those that did were unlikely to have retained such an incriminating souvenir! A major rarity - being one of the premier pieces of Irish Postal History. | 1502 | RARE 'COASTAL STEAMER' RATE COVER FROM LONDON TO DUBLIN; 5-14 May 1838 E from London to Dublin" per Steamer" prepaid at the double 8d Steamer Letter rate ("1/4") with a very fine "PAID SHIP LETTER/LONDON" oval d.s. From 1835 to 1839 the P.O. introduced a little--used "Cheap" rate of 8d per sheet for letters sent by Steamers between ports in Britain. This 8d-rate system (much less than the usual 1s-3d London/Dublin rate) was cheap, but - as this letter shows - could lead to considerable delays because the steamers were not very regular.
