POSTAL REFORMS
1216 JAMES CHALMERS - AUTOGRAPH, BILLHEAD & HIS SON'S PAMPHLETS: 1822 Receipt for books supplied to 'The West Port Library' signed as 'settled' by the famous 'Jas. Chalmers' who submitted Treasury Essays in 1839 and whose son subsequently claimed that his father had 'invented the postage stamp', similar 1838 receipt with printed heading 'JAMES CHALMERS,/PRINTER BOOKSELLER, AND STATIONER,/ DUNDEE' and pair of 1888 printed leaflets by the aforementioned son. (3 items) £90
1217 RARE CHARLES WHITING EMBOSSED "KINGS CROSS" MONUMENT DESIGN; 1836 (presumably) thin card page (18x22.5 cms.) with spectacular embossed Cameo-type portrait of the short-lived "KINGS CROSS" monument at Kings Cross Railway Station; in white on a dark blue ground surrounded by a fancy white embossed border on a pink ground. [The 60-foot monument was erected in 1836 and had a statue of King William IV on the top; it was so unpopular that the King's statue was removed in 1842. The building at the bottom was firstly used as a Police Station and then became a pub!] The whole thing was taken down in 1845. The pink border is inscribed "WHITING PATENTEE" at left. and this style of frame was used on the famous Whiting 'Cameo' portraits of c.1836-40, which Whiting included in his Treasury Essays Competition entry in 1839. This is the first example of this design that we have seen. Attractive and rare. Photo £200

1223 VERY RARE "STAMP USED BEFORE" COVER CHARGED 2d POSTAGE DUE AT CHELTENHAM; 25/26 July 1840 EL to solicitors in Tewkesbury (asking for a further extension of time to pay a small debt!) franked by a fine 4-margin Plate 1B 1d Black lightly cancelled by an orange-red Maltese Cross and just tied by the top line of the address, but fraudulently re-used on this cover to avoid postage; as a result there is a black manuscript "2" on the front with a very fine orange-red "CHELTENHAM/JY26/1840/D" c.d.s. and the purple manuscript "This Stamp as [sic] Been Used Before" beside the stamp.
