| 720 | 1st OPIUM WAR - BRITISH OFFICER's EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF BRITISH ATTEMPTS TO SIGN A PEACE TREATY, ETC.; 31 Jan. - 19 Feb. 1841 EL (long and interesting contents; from the well known 'Morrison' correspondence; see Lot 652 in the Cavendish 'Norman Bennett' auction for a similar earlier cover; sold for £2,530.) from "Macao" (probably written on board HMS 'Volage') to London endorsed "China" and "[Per Ship] Chieftain" on the front, charged "8" with a fair London "SHIP-LETTER" mark (and arrival c.d.s.; 8 July) on the flap. Good contents ref. recent developments in the failed attempts at a Peace Treaty with the Chinese:- "I wrote...on the 10th [Jan.] just before starting for the Bogue; I returned on the 12th, nothing absolutely concluded, but the terms of the Treaty fully agreed to, & only wanting seal & signature...The 'Nemesis' which had been sent up on Sunday last to get the Treaty ratified returned this morning but without any answer. And as the term expires in two days - as too military preparations are going on on the side of the Chinese, which it weas a part of the agreement on Keshen's part, should desist, [and as] the officers are ordered off to their ships & regiments as they have to move up to the Bogue a second time - I fear very much that even now there must be War...I walked down...to the Boat and saw him reach the Steamer, with Capt. Elliot and the Commodore..." Rare letter from the heart of the British forces in China.
