| 453 | IMPORTANT EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE OF VITTORIO WITH RARE "PENNY*PD" & "NOT ACCORDING/TO THE ACT" MARKS; Extraordinary 19 July 1813 EL (professionally re-backed and with some light staining, but folded to show the address-panel and postal marks) from "Logrono" (Spain; 60 miles east of Burgos) to Leicester, headed (faintly; perhaps therefore not noticed by the P.O.) & countersigned for Private John Bingley, with a mostly fine rare red Falmouth "PENNY*PD" mark on the front, but also charged "2/5" and then "2/6" with a very fine 2-ring London "MORE/TO/PAY" mark nearby, and having a very fine boxed London "NOT ACCORDING/TO THE ACT" on the lower flap, matching the London "FOREIGN" transit c.d.s. The apparent absence of the sender's name, rank and unit (though it is just discernible at top right) would have made the letter liable to the full postage according to the relevant Act, hnece the charge and marks. The contents are also highly important, giving the writer's account of his experiences at the Battle of Vittorio on 21 June 1813; "...the Glorious & Decisive 21st of June...a more complete Victory was never gained than on that day...over the Ragamuffins, the French - It was shocking to see the destruction of men & horses on both sides; the French fled before us in the greatest disorder and distress, with the greatest loss of guns, ammunition & stores that ever was known...Our Brigade was encamped in a wood about 5 leagues short of Vittoria. At day break we marched away &...we found the French in a very advantageous position...our British cavalry could not charge them & the Rebels stood a long contest; we was on a hill & saw the whole of their movements...it is shocking beyond description to see a Field of Battle, but however I could not help smiling to see how the villains scampered when they saw our Heavy Brigade form up to cover the Guns; tho' we exchanged a few balls, but I thank God theirs did no executuion in our Brigade except two. One of them killed 2 of our horses & the other wounded one of the Life Guard horses; we have not a man killed or wounded - our two horses each of them lost a leg by a six pounder...[At the gates of Vittoria]...[we had to] retire about 200 yards as the contents of their Bomb shells was seen to tear what they struck as they bursted about 30 yards in front of us...the streets was almost blockaded with their Guns, ammunition waggons, Baggage & stores of almost all kinds of great value, which fell into the hands of the English...Our Brigade halted in a wood that night about eleven o'clock after the most harassing day I ever knew...[Pamplona] Castle is a strong fortified place...I suppose they [the French] wish themselves out of it, which they have proposed to do if they may take theire stores, but Lord Wellington (it is said) rejects their proposal..." Rare description of the most decisive battle of the Peninsular Wars. [Full transcript; plus part transcript of the following lot which suggests that this 19 July 1813 letter was published in the newspapers back in England during the autumn of 1813.] Photo plate 16A | £750 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The letter talks of the Army's hopes for peace, describes the Spanish population returning to some kind of normality after "struggling under the Tyrannical sway of Bonaparte for these last six years...", and noting that "It is probable that we shall remain in Logrono this winter...we are situated in very good quarters tho' our horses are in Barracks & our duty is very little... I have had the good fortune to be promoted to full Corporal...I could not forbear laughing when I saw by your letter that my last [letter to you] was published...I hope you will preserve a newspaper containing a copy of 'a Letter from a Young Soldier in the Peninsula' [for me]..." The letter describes Wellington's army getting ready for the final Battle with Napoleon near Brussels; "...there is some thousands of the British Army as well as 10,000 Portuguese which join'd the other day...Napoleon, whose soldiers are daily deserting. We are thankfully informed that the bold Russians have arrived with a flexible Army on the opposite side of Mr. Bony [= Napoleon!]. He also notes that "...my wounds are all healed, but my left arm still continues very weak & my right knee is rather stiff..." Very rare letter from an infantry soldier involved in the thick of the fighting at this most imprtant of Wellington's battles against Napoleon. Photo | £750 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
