FIRST DAY OF UNIFORM 4d POSTAGE PERIOD COVER WITH EDINBURGH HADSTRUCK "4" MARK; Very rare 5 Dec. 1839 EL (usual file-folds; well clear of "4" mark - neatly folded to show internal dated heading beside address-panel) from "Edinburgh" to Perth with a very fine black Edinburgh HANDSTRUCK "4" mark on the front (First Day of Use), having an 85% clear very fine red Edinburgh "DEC/5/1839" c.d.s. (crease) on the top flap. Very Rare First Day Usage and an Important Exhibition Item. Photo £1500
CHARLES WHITING EMBOSSED COLOURED CAMEO-PORTRAIT OF THE YOUNG QUEEN VICTORIA; c.1839 card (5x6½ ins.) with beautiful embossed cameo portrait (few stain-spots) of the young Queen (head and shoulders between garlands of oak-leaves), in white on central circle (blue background) of fancy embossed frame, with "WHITING PATENTEE" imprint along right-hand edge, having a printed "Victoria R" 'autograph' below the portrait.. This is a similar design to the well-known series from which Whiting submitted the Cameos of Wellington, Brougham & Byron to the Oct. 1839 'Treasury Competition', and having the same circular portrait as the green & red version from the 'Wallace Papers'. Whting also used this design for advertising window-cards for "Victoria Pen Knibs". Fine example of Whiting's skills. Very rare. Photo £500
VERY HIGH POSTAL RATE ON PRESTAMP COVER EX INDIA VIA EGYPT & MALTA; 25 Mar. 1839 EL from "Bombay" (faint red oval-framed "INDIA" on the front) to London "via Marseilles, p. Steamer to Suez" with v. fine 2-ring black "INDES/ALEXANDRIE" c.d.s. (crease), near v. fine 2-ring "PURIFIE AU LAZARET/MALTE" mark (crease) on the front, charged the exceptionally high rate of "£1.4.1½" with v. fine boxed London "BRITISH/FOREIGN" mark on the flap, giving the breakdown of rates (11-1 British postage + 13-1½ French postage). Good example of the need for cheap postage! Rare thus.Photo £100
7 MAY 1840 - 2nd DAY 1d BLACK COVER WITH STAMP USED AS SEAL & WITH SEPARATE MALTESE CROSS ON FRONT; Remarkable 7/9 May 1840 env. (trivial faults; opened out for display, complete with contents - family letter with news of the "shocking Murder of poor Lord Wm. Russell") sent from "Robin Hood Farm" (Kingston, Surrey) to Scotland (Culross), franked over the seal with a Plate 1a 1d Black (GI; 4m but with faults) just tied by a light orange-red Maltese Cross matching the "T·P/Kingston" alongside (with a second strike of the TP mark in black), having a second very fine strike of the same Maltese Cross on the front, presumably to confirm the acceptance of the stamp on the reverse (although this was strictly against the rules). There are very fine transit c.d.s.'s of London Chief Office ("MY-7/1840") and Edinburgh (9 May 1840) on the reverse. [It seems that there are two different Maltese Crosses on the stamp; it may well be that the light Kingston M.C. was so faint that the P.O. in London or Edinburgh struck their own M.C. as well, to make the cancellation more thorough; this has led to doubts about the stamp belonging to the cover in the past - see M. Jackson, p.65 - but the R.P.S. certificate states that it is genuine, and we are of the same opinion.] The letter was redirected to Edinburgh and has a black manuscript "1d" charge for that redirection of the front. It is interesting to note that this is a very early example of the Maltese Cross used at a London Country Sorting Office, and in a distinctive shade of ink. Very rare thus. [With 1996 RPS Certificate of Genuineness.] Photo £750
REMARKABLE 1d BLACK COVER WITH 50 SETS OF INITIALS PROVING THE P.O.'s EFFORTS TO FIND THE ADDRESSEE; 24 June1840 EL (with small printed creditors notice inside) from "Cupar" (Fife; faint boxed d.s. on top flap) to "South Bridge, Edinburgh" franked by an attractive 1d Black (light impression; 4 shaved to clear margins) tied by an orange-red M.C. and by a P.O. endorsement. The letter is endorsed "Left South Bridge, Edinr., said to be gone to Liverpool" and "Cannot be found", being charged "1" in manuscript for the redirection. Most exceptionally, the reverse has manuscript numbers from 1 to 50 almost all with different sets of intiials, prsumably proving that all the inhabitants of South Bridge had been shown the letter! Amazing early Victorian P.O. efficiency! Photo £400
10th JAN. 1840 - VERY RARE FIRST DAY USAGE OF BLACK HANDSTRUCK "2" MARK ON UNPAID COVER; 10 Jan. 1840 EL (written on 9th Jan. but posted the next day) sent unpaid from "Edinburgh" to Stirling with a lovely strike of Edinburgh's Handstruck "2" in black on the front - First Day Usage on an unpaid Uniform Penny Postage cover - with a very fine Edinr. "JAN/C 10 F/1840" c.d.s. (light fold) nicely placed on the top flap. Exhibition Quality. Arguably the most difficult U.P.P. First Day Cover to find; the Handstruck "2" in black used on this date is seldom seen. Photo £400
6th MAY 1840 - PREPAID 2d-RATE COVER SENT FROM SCOTLAND BEFORE STAMPS WERE AVAILABLE THERE; Fine 6 May 1840 EL (long printed circular ref. the Scottish Burghs holding a meeting; complete with separate enclosed sheet, which explains why this letter weighed above ½ an ounce) prepaid 2d from Edinburgh to "The Provost of Stirling", with a red crayon "2" and a very fine red "PAID at EDINR./E/MAY 6/1840" c.d.s. nicely placed on the front. The 1d Black was not available in Scotland on 6 May 1840, nor was the 2d Blue, hence the need to pay this letter in cash. Rare and attractive Exhibition Item posted on this most siginificant date. Photo £240
6th MAY 1840 COVER PREPAID 1d IN CASH IN SCOTLAND; Fine 6 May 1840 EL (clearly dated inside) from "Ash Craig" to Paisley endorsed "Paid" with a red manuscript "1" on the front beside a mostly very fine red boxed "GREENOCK/MY 6A/1840" datestamp, having a very fine black boxed 7 May "PAISLEY" arrival d.s. on the top flap. 729 6th MAY 1840 COVER PREPAID 1d IN CASH IN SCOTLAND (PERTHSHIRE); Fine 6 May 1840 EL (folded to show dated heading alongside address-panel) to "Charlestown Limeworks by Dunfermline", clearly dated inside "6 May 1840" and endorsed "Paid", having a red manuscript "Pd 1" on the front beside a very fine scarce small "ERROL" (Perthshire) straight-line mark. 730 THE UNIQUE (?) "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" EMBOSSED PICTORIAL STAMP-CARICATURE ENVELOPE USED TO AUSTRALIA; The famous 11 June 1850 usage (from Edinburgh to Bathurst, N.S.W.) of a small envelope (closed tears at foot and faults on reverse but very attractive) with a pink printed embossed stamp-frame oval, in the stamp-position, inscribed "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN"; showing a Steamer to the left and a Steam-engine to the right. There is no stamp in the centre of the oval (the letter being prepaid 8d in cash as a Ship Letter to Australia) but the sender has drawn his own amusing Caricature-stamp (depicting Prince Albert?) where a stamp would have been. There are Edinburgh & London "PAID" d.s.'s on the front, with red m/s "8" and fine red "SHIP LETTER/ LONDON" c.d.s., plus mostly fine Sydney (29 Sept.) and "BATHURST" (1 Oct.) d.s.'s on the reverse. This amazing and amusing cover appears to be one of very few early Caricatures of the Postage Stamp that have been recorded. [Ex Meroni, 1952, and Tony Alcock, lot 397, sold for £1,430 in Dec. 1989.] Photo £750
