1371 RARE 'CORSINI' COVER FROM EDINBURGH TO LONDON; 2 Jan. 1590 EL (minor toning clear of address and some reinforced folds around address-panel) from "Edden[burgh]." addressed "To ye worshipfull Mr. Phillipp Corsine in London" with interesting contents in English (full typed transcript included), written by an Edinburgh law court official, "Wm. Mylburne". The letter mentions the "Lord Ambassadors", two men "put in prison", the "Magistrates of Eddenburgh", the "Lord Admirall of Skottland", etc. Very few pre-1600 letters sent from Scotland to England have been recorded; this letter was one of only four 'Corsini' letters sent from Scotland (of which only two others were sent from Edinburgh). 1372 CIVIL WAR PERIOD - RARE LOCAL LETTER FROM "EDINBROUGH" ENDORSED "IN HEAST" [=IN HASTE]; 17 May 1643 EL from "Edinbrough" addressed "To my Most Honerable and kynd Brother, The La[i]rd of Haltoun, thees [be delivered] in heast". Written and signed by "Jeane Acheson" with easily read contents ref. a loan of 7,000 marks, etc. Prresumably sent by a servant to an address near Edinburgh. 1373 RARE COMMONWEALTH PERIOD "4"[d] POSTAL RATE COVER FROM EDINBURGH TO LONDON; Fine 22 Dec. 1655 EL from "Ed[inbu]rgh" addressed "For Francis Kinloch at the three whyt bels nere Somerset Yerd in ye Strand, At London" with a clear manuscript "4"[d] charge on the front, being the Cromwellian Commonwealth P.O. rate for a letter sent between London and Scotland. PRE-EDINBURGH BISHOP MARK COVER TO HOLLAND; 2 Aug. 1693 EL (somewhat grubby; interesting contents ref. expenditure) from "Edenb." to Rottrerdam endorsed "pd 10d to London" (double rate) with a v. fine "AV/9" London transit Bishop Mark on the flap, but with no trace at all of any oval Edinburgh Bishop Mark, although Auckland/Stables record 5 Aug. 1693 as the earliest known Edinburgh Bishop Mark. Could this letter have been sent on the last day before the introduction of the Scottish Bishop Mark, or has anyone seen a 3 or 4 Aug. 1693 letter from Edinburgh sent outside Scotland??? £85

HALF-ONLY-STRUCK OVAL EDINBURGH "DE" BISHOP MARK ERROR ON COVER TO HOLLAND; 5 Dec. 1696 EL from "Edr." to Rotterdam endorsed "pd 5d to Lond[on].", having a mostly very fine part oval Edinburgh "DE" Bishop Mark with the numeral "5" and lower semi-circle entirely missing (Unique thus in our records) beside a fine "DE/10" London transit Bishop Mark, both slightly affected by a long filing endorsement. The Edinburgh oval Bishop Mark is often struck with the two halves slightly misplaced, but this is the only example with half of the oval missing that we have recorded. A rare Bishop Mark Error. 'REVERSED 4' ERROR IN EDINBURGH OVAL BISHOP MARK ON COVER FROM MELROSE TO LIVERPOOL; Important 31 Oct. 1709 EL (small stain affects corner of address-panel but well clear of postal marks) from "Melrose" to "Leverpoell, South Britain" (!), having a very fine split-halves "NO/4" oval Edinburgh Bishop Mark on the lower flap showing the numeral "4" clearly engraved in reverse, beside a fine "NO/9" London transit Bishop Mark. Very rare Bishop Mark error; not recorded by Auckland/Stables. The "4" was clearly engraved wrongly rather than being inserted sideways. 1380 RARE EARLY "STRANRAER" ROUTE COVER TO IRELAND VIA LONDON; 23 June 1711 EL (minor unnecessary 'magic' tape inside) from "Edr." addressed to "Whitehouse in the County of Antrim in the Kingdom of Ireland, to the care of Andrew Logan at the Swan in Belfast, to the care of the Postmaster in Stranraer, Ireland" (ink blot affects one word) with a nearly fine oval "IU/23" Edinburgh Bishop Mark on the flap beside a v. fine "IV/29" London transit Bishop Mark; endorsed "Pd 6d" and charged "For[war]d 6". Rare early letter sent by this Stranraer route, and posted less than a month after the 1711 Post Office Act came into effect (on 1 June 1711). Photo £100

1388 THE VERY RARE EDINBURGH "FREE/E" MARK (ON "Mifsent to London" COVER), ETC.; 29 Jan. 1794 E (very minor wear but attractive) to Skipton (in Yorkshire and so not needing to travel to London) headed and countersigned for the franking privilege with a mostly very fine small red encircled "FREE/E" mark of Edinburgh on the front, matching the red "JA/29" Bishop Mark on the flap; but also endorsed "Mifsent to London" on the front, with a London 1 Feb. 1794 backstamp. We have only recorded one other (inferior) cover with this famous cancellation (which was sold in Cavendish's 14 Oct. 1989 auction, lot 442, for £1,700 - a record at that time). 1403 GLASGOW - LOCAL CANCELLATION MISCELLANY: 1855-56 pair of 1d "Stars" envelopes to London & Edinburgh cancelled by mostly v.fine strikes of the scarce small twin-lined "GORDON STREET" & "ST.ROLLOX" cancels (both only rated as Rarity A by Alcock but not easy to find with strikes as good as these) plus Feb. 1856 piece with creased 1d "Stars" (faults) tied by a partial blue-green Type V "GORDON STREET" cancel (Rarity E in this colour) plus attractive local 11 Jan. 1858 mourning env. franked with 1d "Stars" tied by a v.fine small boxed "HILLHEAD" (Rarity D) and c1856 piece with an earlier 1d "Stars" tied by a complete fine strike of the same cancellation. 1404 EXHIBITION COLLECTION OF EDINBURGH DOTTED CIRCLE DUPLEX COVERS; 1857-89 covers/cards with mostly hand-picked very fine strikes of the whole range of these attractive duplexes, almost all neatly identified and written-up on pages, inc. 1406 DAMAGED IN TRANSIT MARK + LABEL INC. RARE RED WAX "G.P.O./VR/EDINBURGH" SEAL; 1857 1d Red env. (faults and stamp wrapped round edge) from Broadford (Isle of Skye; "59" numeral but no backstamp) to Edinburgh with v. fine rare black boxed "RECEIVED OPEN/& RE-SEALED/AT THE POST OFFICE/EDINBURGH" on the reverse, beside a very fine fancy red wax "GENERAL POST OFFICE/[Crown]/VR/EDINBURGH" seal. Plus large 1909 advertising env. from Whitstable to Dingwall with KEVII 1d, having no less than four "E[Crown]R/FOUND OPEN AND OFFICIALLY RESEALED" labels with Dingwall c.d.s.'s on the front. 1411 ISLAND OF LUNGA - EARLY COVER EX ENGLAND VIA FERRYBRIDGE, EDINBURGH & INVERARY; 1780 EL from Liverpool (almost v. fine "LIVER/POOL" on flap) addressed to "Lunga Scotland Via Edinburgh & Inverary" and endorsed "Turn at Ferrybridge", charged "4" then "8" and clearly intended for the tiny island of Lunga near Scarba off the coast of Jura. 1412 BOWMORE (ISLAY) "VILLIGE"- RARE ERROR OF SPELLING: Dated (2, June & Nov. 1856) & undated pieces with 1d "Stars" adhesives (two with faults) tied by mostly fine to very fine boxed "BOWMORE VILLIGE" marks (Alcock Rarity D in blue or black) in black or blue-black; two also tied by Greenock numeral or Experimental duplex. 1413 ISLE OF RAASAY - RARE UNIFORM 4d POSTAGE PERIOD COVER WITH "BRAOD/=FORD" (SKYE) AND MANUSCRIPT "4" CHARGE; 10 Dec. 1839 EL (slightly grubby) from "Isle of Rasay by Broadford, Skye" to Cairndow having a very fine scarce small "BROAD/=FORD" mark (rare during 4d Postage Period) on the top flap, with a black manuscript "4" on the front, also having Glasgow & Edinburgh transit d.s.'s on the flap. 1414 ISLE OF SKYE - VERY RARE FIRST DAY ADDITIONAL ½d COVER PLUS RELEVANT ACT, ETC.; Remarkable [c.8] June 1813 E (subsequent notes written inside but the original letter not present) to Edinburgh with a very faint (almost albino) red boxed "PORTREE/746 - E" mileage mark on the front, charged "1/1" at Portree (for the 350 miles to Edinr.; single rate). The Act introducing the Additional ½d could not be put into effect in Scotland until 11 June 1813, when incopming mails to Edinr. had the extra ½d added in manuscript to the rates that had been charged at their offices of posting. This letter has a very fine Edinr. "JUN/B 11 A/1813" arrival c.d.s. on the front , and so also has a bold manuscript "½[d]" added to the "1/1" Portreee P.O. rate but in a different ink. Very Rare First Day Cover of the ½d charge, and exceptional on a letter from the Hebrides. [Ex Pegasus Collection; sold by Cavendish, 19 July 2003, lot 519, for £437.] Plus original printed Act of 1813 introducing the Addl. ½d charge, and 7 other hand-picked Edinr. "Addl./½" covers (one posted in 1812 and then turned & re-posted 5 years later in 1817 to Jamaica with Addl./½ mark!!). (8 covers + 1 Act). Photo £300

1416 THE RARE "Oll[aberr]y" ABBREVIATED MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION: c1849 3½ margin 1d red plate 83 cancelled by a clear & rare m/s "Olly/P.O." marking. No examples recorded on cover; only a handful of off-cover examples known, all with this unusual "Olly P.O." abbreviation (see Alcock p.5). Exhibition item from a tiny Shetland Islands village P.O.
