1206 FALMOUTH - "PACKET-LETTER" COVER EX BRITISH SHIP BLOCKADING CORFU; 26 June 1809 EL (large part typed transcript included) from "HMS Magnificent, Off Corfu" to Ireland with mostly v. fine black "FALMOUTH/ PACKET-LETTER" mark on the front, charged "3/-" and then "3/5". The contents are most interesting; "...We have got a small Squadron of Frigates under our orders for the purpose of blockading the [Ionian] Islands which ar in possession of the French...". 1232 ANGOLA/BELGIAN CONGO - 6d-RATE COVER ADDRESSED TO "SHARKS POINT, RIVER CONGO, WEST COAST AFRICA"; Remarkable 21 Mar. 1877 mourning env. (toned but signed on the front by Sir Moses Montefiore) addressed to the Captain iof "H.M.S. Avon, Sharks Point, River Conmgo, West Coast Aftrica", franked by 3d rose-red pair (pl.18; perf. faults) tied by a v. fine "RAMSGATE/634" duplex with a second strike alongside. This ship was involved in a punitive expedition against various local villages at the mouth of the Congo River at this time; the area was on the edge of Portuguese Angola, but it was not to become part of the Belgain Congo until 1885.
