GUERNSEY POSTAL HISTORY
3137 VERY RARE P.O. 'FROM GUERNSEY' MARKING IN MANUSCRIPT ON COVER TO IRELAND: 11 Dec., 1799 EL (reinforced somewhat at top just clear of marks) from 'Guernsey' to Dublin (charged '9' and then '10') having a partly fine concave "WEYMOUTH" on the front beside a bold P.O. 'from Guernsey' endorsement of which we have recorded only one other example. The better known (but also rare) handstruck version of this routing mark was recorded only from 1810 to 1837. This is one of the rarest of all Channel Islands prestamp marks and on a par with the rarest Jersey/Guernsey Ship Letters. The contents (from a British Army Officer with the Channel Isles 'Defence Force') are also interesting re. the threatened French invasion; "...we had the whole island to ourselves for near three weeks, but have now plenty of troops; 4,000 Russians and two other Regts...."
