| 3056 | CHIGWELL - EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER - SENT DURING THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR; 10 Nov. 1645 EL (remarkably fine condition) clearly dated and headed from "Chigwell"; addressed "For my worthy brother Mr. Richard Persehowse this, I pray, at Renolds Hall, nigh Walsall", with interesting contents about preventing the cutting down of a holly wood. The contents reveal that the letter was sent by private means (the Post Office was in chaos due to the Civil War at this date); "I have wrote...by this my servant, Lawre[nce] Ripley...", and it mentions a present of "two paire of white gloves" sent along with the letter. | 3064 | COLCHESTER - VERY EARLY "TWIN" LETTER TO IRELAND; 10 Oct. 1682 EL from "Colchester" having two long separate letters written by different people on the one large sheet of paper (to avoid postage; this system of sending multiple letters on single sheets was quite common, but few examples have survived intact). The letter is addressed "To Thomas Atherton at the Blew Boot in Patrick Street in Dublin in Ireland; for Benjamin Bangs, Dublin"; it is endorsed "Ben. Bang's Letters" on the flap; presumably Atherton was a shop-keeper who took delivery of letters for others. There is a mostly very fine London "OC/17" Bishop Mark on the flap and the distinctive manuscript "6" charge (London to Dublin rate) on the front. The letters appear to from Quaker friends of Mr. Bangs; Solomon Formantell and Stephen Crisp. The former mentioned that "...it be here with us a verey sickly time, & many freindes are visited with the small pocks..."
