3022 MATCHING JOHN DAY COLOURED CHRISTMAS CARD ON ½d LILAC POSTCARD; Attractive and fine 24/25 Dec. 1871 usage of the small format &Mac189;d lilac PC (slight stain on each side) to Clevedon (25 Dec. arrival c.d.s. on reverse), cancelled by a fine "WRINGTON" c.d.s. overstruck by a superb "BRISTOL/134" duplex. The fine coloured pictorial design on the reverse has an angels-and-kitchen-range design, with holly and printed Christmas cheer verse. Very rare early British Picture Postcard. 3023 MATCHING JOHN DAY CHRISTMAS CARD OF 1876; 30/31 Dec. 1876 usage of the small format ½d lilac Postcard to Witney (fine arrival c.d.s. on reverse) cancelled by a very fine "BECCLES/59" duplex, with a most attractive colour-printed pictorial design printed on the reverse, depicting a log fire, peace doves, etc.; also having the usual "JOHN B. DAY" imprint. Again, this is the only example of this design that we have recorded, and this is a very rare 1870s example of a British Picture Postcard. Exhibition Item. Photo £240
3024 STUNNING COLOURED PRINTED PICTORIAL ADVERTISING POSTCARD SENT BY BOOK-POST AT ½d RATE; Rare 2 Dec. 1880 larrge printed (both sides) Postcard (addressee's name erased, but hardly noticeable) inscribed "BOOK POST" franked by 1880 ½d green tied by the London Printed Matter barred c.d.s.; advertising "CHAS. CADBY, PIANOFORTE MANUFACTURERS" in black & yellow, depicting their factory, a piano and musical staves on the front, and on the back (in black alone) showing the interior of their factory and terms ("FROM 30 TO 180 GUINEAS"!), etc. The card was redirected within the local London area and so it has a very fine crowned circle "R" mark beside the address. 3030 17th ENTURY LETTERS/COVERS ADDRESSED TO [SIR] JOHN MOORE; 1659-1700 lot inc. 1659 schoolboy's "Lines" (!) in Latin, 1668 EL from "Hemsworth" (Yorks. - near Dronfield, Derbys.) with fair Bishop Mark, 1675 schoolboy's letter requesting he be removed from school, 1682 EL privately carried from Appleby (Leics.) endorsed "By Matt Bakewell [carrier] at the Bel[l] in Smithfield", 1686/7 EL charged "9" from Venice with fair Foreign Branch Bishop Mark, 1699 manuscript evidence of a Hackney-Coach driver ref. a journey to Islington, and 1700 local privately carried letter with mention of Guy Fawkes Day celebrations. 3031 ELIZABETHAN EXCHEQUER WARRANT FOR ROYAL MESSENGER: Large part c.1560 Exchequer Warrant for the payment of the then considerable sum of £4 14s 4d in respect of a 35 day journey transporting 'my Lord's Ires' @ 2s 8d per day, boldly signed at the end by the First Marquis 'Winchester' (Queen Elizabeth I's Treasurer from 1550 until his death in 1572) and confirming that this amount was 'payd by way of the tellers of the Quyn's Matie's Recepte at Westmester'. £150
3032 STATE LETTER FROM LONDON TO EDINBURGH: 1661 (11 June) EL apparently from London addressed 'For the right Honoble The Earl of Tweeddale Charles William Maitland of Halton, The Lord President of the Session Mr. Ro. Burnet, Senator of the College of Justice, Sir John Warchop, the Lord of Renton & Sir Wm. Thomson' (all seemingly Edinburgh notables) signed by the Earl of 'Lauderdale', King Charles II's Secretary for Scottish Affairs, and sent by messenger ('the bearer') whose expenses the writer asks the recipients to pay! £100
3033 THE GREAT PLAGUE - LETTER TO ESSEX WITH MENTION OF THE NUMBERS DYING; "March 7th 1665" EL (minor dusting and other faults but with complete contents; typescript included) - dating either from the early weeks of the Plague in 1665, or if dated by the 'legal' year then dating from the closing weeks of the Plague in 1666 - from "London" addressed to "Bppi [=Bishop's] Hall in Chelmsford" and sent by private means (probably by "carrier"), having rare mention of the Great Plague in London; "Through [God's] mercy, the sickness is againe decreased this week: 14 in the whole, there being but 28 of the Plague in all, whereof 7 within the walles; the total of all diseases being 238." Rare contemporary reference to the Great Plague, in a family letter from husband to wife. Photo £200
3034 RARE "OFF/4" IN CIRCLE RECEIVING HOUSE MARK ON COVER SENT c/o "YE POSTMASTER IN YORKE"; Attractive 10 July 1676 EL ("B.R.A." defunct British Records Association mark inside - from material sold by the Society sevarl decades ago) from "London", addressed to "Thirkleby in Yorkeshire" with the endorsement "To bee left wh ye Postmaster in Yorke to bee sent as above directed", with manuscript "pd 3d" on the front, having a near fine "IY/12" Bishop Mark on the side-flap, beside a partial (but readily recognisable) very rare "OFF/4" in circle London Receiving House mark (Jay L66; few known).
