2932 1910 BLACKPOOL TO SOUTHPORT FLIGHT: 1910 (26 Aug.) special Empire Illustrated advertising card addressed to Penrith. The card was supposed to have been carried from Blackpool to Southport as an experiment, it is overprinted in red "FIRST 'AERIAL' MAIL/although boisterous weather/conditions prevented the experiment being carried out in ite entirity/this card was carried by Aeroplane/for over seven miles in a very/high wind" This event took place at Blackpool Carnival and was the first attempt at carrying mail by air, it failed due to high winds.Also a photographic postcard of Mr Graham White flying with a passenger. (opened out for display) ex Belgium to Tunbridge Wells franked with strip of three Belgian imperf. medallions 20c blue (clear to wide margins almost all round) just tied by barred "85" numerals having red "NAMUR" c.d.s.'s plus a faint but recognisable strike of the rare blue Dover framed "FOREIGN PAID" mark [KT377] on the front & a partial blue Dover c.d.s. on the back. Also 1855 Kent to France env. @ 4d rate with v. fine oval framed blue "PD." mark. [Ex Martin Willcocks]. (2 covers). £150
2956 MARGATE - UNRECORDED OVAL CROWNED "Ship Letter/MARGATE" MARK: 1811 (April-May) EL (large part of small flap lost and some dusting) from 'Kingston, Jama.' to London endorsed 'p Ship/Phoenix/W.G.P' bearing a faint but easily recognisable strike of the complete oval-framed "Ship Letter /(crown)/MARGATE" mark (crease) which Robertson did not record (although the 'Ship Letter removed' variety [KT767] has been occasionally recorded on inland mail in 1830. This cover has the only recorded example of the complete mark [KT1564 - sole record] and is thus an important addition to the record. Photo £200
2957 SHEERNESS - VERY RARE OVAL "Ship Lre/(crown)/SHEERNESS" MARK: Very fine June/Dec., 1810 EL from Lisbon to Captain of H.M. Brig Delight at Cadiz but much re-directed to Portsmouth and then to London with a partial strike of the rare red oval-framed "Ship Lre/(crown)/SHE[ER]NESS" mark [Rob.S2; KT1658; known only in 1810 and possibly the only recorded example] well placed on the front and having Aug. & Dec., 1810 London transit c.d.s.'s on the flap.
