2225 NAVAL BAG MAIL EX GOLD COAST, 1863: Officer's letter (endorsed) written in stages at Cape Coast Castle and Ascension whence it was transported by Naval Bag to Portsmouth, the E (battered, missing one stamp) with GB 1d reds (5) cancelled by the Portsmouth duplex; the letter refers to the court martial of two marines for drunkenness & theft - "sentenced to receive 48 lashes, two years imprizonment [sic] one of which hard labour" - the purpose of the voyage to Ascension was to try prisoners and escort them to jail. WITH SCARCE BOXED "INSUFFICIENTLY/PRE-PAID" MARK; 21 July 1882 env. to London "Via San Francisco" franked by Queensland 1882 6d green tied by unclear numeral matching the fair "R[?]OPERS PLAINS" c.d.s. on the front, which was overstruck by a mostly very fine (Brisbane?) boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY/PRE-PAID" mark; endorsed "Left..." with Oct. 1882 London c.d.s.'s and London diamond-framed "IS/1" Inspector's mark on the reverse.
