2120 ROMAN WOODEN WRITING-TABLET "FOUND IN LONDON"; Remarkable c.250 A.D. small wooden tablet (no wax remaining; now split into two sections) with simple incised lines around three sides of the central recessed area, having three perforations on the fourth side's edge. Minor stains and some other faults, but very rare. This lot is accompanied by a small hand-written label inscribed "ANCIENT ROMAN WRITING TABLET AND ROMAN STYLUS FOUND IN LONDON" (with "£2 the two" changed to "35/-" on the reverse beside a dealer's "sy/-" coding!). WRITING STYLUS (FROM LONDON?); Matching item to the previous lot (from the same source): c.250 A.D. plain bronze (?) tapered stylus (124mm overall) with long point and the usual flattened scraper-end. One end was used to incise letters into the wax laid onto the surface of a wooden writing-tablet (see pervious lot), while the other end was used to smoothe over any errors in the writing in the wax:- all-in-one pen and eraser. (some dusting etc., contemporary faults at top with explanatory boxed London "Found open and/resealed in I.B." on the reverse, and resealed with two partial red wax "INLAND BRANCH/GENERAL POST OFFICE" seals on the reverse) addressed to Surrey and franked by a C.G.H. 1d red tied by a v. fine "QUEENSTOWN/C.G.H."
