1329 INGOING REGISTERED POSTCARD FROM GERMANY WITH VERY RARE SANDAKAN "UNKOWN" MARKS; Attractive 20 Sept. 1896 registered usage of the 5pf green PC from "NUERNBERG" (fine oval d.s. cancels) with red "R" label, addressed to "Elopura, Nord Borneo", uprated with well-tied 5pf+10pf+20pf; but returned to Nurnberg (3 Jan. 1897 arrival c.d.s. on address side) with two lovely strikes of the very rare Sandakan handstruck "UNKNOWN." mark (back & front), of which only one other example - dated 1894 - has been recorded. 1335 RARE ST. DENIS BOXED "SUEZ" MARK ON INGOING COVER FROM FRANCE VIA G.B., DIVERTED FROM INTENDED C.G.H. ROUTE; Unusual small 11 Aug. 1857 E (lightly toned) from "AUXONNE" (v. fine c.d.s. on the front) to "L'Ile Bourbon, Voie d/Angleterre" (subsequently endorsed "Reunion" - for the benefit of the British P.O.?!) with red boxed "PD" on the front, having a partly fine "ST. DENIS/ILE DE LA REUNION" c.d.s. (14 Oct.) on the flap, matching the ink of the partly fine small boxed "SUEZ" mark on the front. The letter had been intended to go via the Southampton-Cape route, but the P&O steamer was delayed at Southampton, and so the letter was re-routed (rare thus) to the Suez route, hence this St. Denis arrival mark; but no extra charge seems to have been made. 1336 STAMPED & STAMPLESS PREPAID MAIL TO FRANCE; Attractive 5 May 1862 EL from "St. Pierre, Ile de la Reunion" addressed to Marseilles, franked by French Colonies 'Eagle' 40c orange + 10c brown (apparently both with 4 good margins, but slightly overlapped) tied by a single superb dotted diamond, matching the fine 2-ring "ST. PIERRE/ILE DE LA REUNION" c.d.s. alongside, with a red 2-ring "COLONIES FRA. V. SUEZ/1" c.d.s. and red boxed "PD" also on the front. Most attractive. SAUDI ARABIA
1338 VERY RARE JEDDAH COVER (UNIQUE?) TO ALEXANDRIA WITH EGYPTIAN ADHESIVES CANCELLED BY THE MAIL STEAMER's DOTTED RETTA CANCELS; Extraordinary and very fine 16 Oct. 1877 EL from "Jeddah" (written in Italian; full typed transcript & translation included) to "Alessandria, Egitto" franked by Egypt 1pi coral-red + 20pa blue-grey tied by two fine dotted 'retta' cancels, which must have been applied on board the ship from Jedda to Suez, because uncancelled stamps noted en route at Suez would have been cancelled by the normal Suez c.d.s. There are fine Italian P.O. backstamps of "SUEZ" (10 Oct.) and "ALESSANDRIA" (21 Oct.). This is thought to be the only recorded example of stamps on a cover from Saudi Arabia having been cancelled in the Uffizio Natante (Ship's P.O.) of the K.M.L. steamer, en route from Jeddah to Suez.
