INDIA - PRESTAMP OVERLAND MAILS
1199 FIRST (UNSUCCESSFUL) VOYAGE COVER BY "STEAMER FORBES" MATCHED WITH ONE SENT BY THE "RESCUE" VESSEL; Remarkable pair of 11 Apr. & 4 May 1834 E's (one with cut flap) to Edinburgh/Portsmouth, endorsed "Per Steamer Forbes" and "p. Palamban", but both reaching London on the same day with different types of boxed "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" marks (overstruck but fine) in black & in red on the reverse respectively. The first had been posted from "MYNPOOREE" (fair oval d.s.) but had been carried by the Pioneer Steamer 'Forbes', that broke down at Madras on the First Steamer Voyage attempted to Suez, so it was transferred to the sailing vessel 'Palamban' for the journey on to Falmouth instead. The second letter (from "[Ship] Hyacinth at sea") was handed to the 'Palamban' direct, and so both letters reached Falmouth together, though they had different "India Letter" marks (presumably because of the extra large mail on one ship, extra sorting was required). Rare pair. Plus c.1830 print of Falmouth bay. (2 covers + 1 print). [Both ex Neil Blair.] PHOTO - see plate no. £200
1200 FIRST SUCCESSFUL STEAMER VOYAGE (CALCUTTA TO SUEZ) COVER "PR. STEAMER FORBES" TO G.B.; Rare 29 Aug. 1834 EL from "Garden Reach, near Calcutta" to London endorsed "Pr. Unlike the first attempt (see previous lot), this time the 'Forbes' successfully steamed to Suez in 69 days. This cover was then sent to Malta via Corfu and then by British Packet to Falmouth, and so was charged "3/2" being the Packet Rate from Alexandria to London. Important Pioneer Steamer cover; few are recorded from this first voyage. [Ex Neil Blair.] Photo £400
