1080 UNDERPAID 8d-RATE COVER TO G.B.; 6 May 1890 env. (posted exactly 50 years after the introduction of the 1d Black!) to London franked with 2d lilac (4) tied by v. fine Melbourne duplexes, but with a fair red "DEFICIENT POSTAGE [4]/FINE.....[4]/[8]" mark on the front, suggesting that it had been (wrongly?) treated as an unendorsed letter intended for the long sea route and so to be fined; there is also a Plymouth "8D/620" transit charge-mark. Rare thus. Photo £140

Colonial Schooner 'Champion' via Colombo) posted from Bombay with red "INDIA" in oval, and routed via Suez & Southampton (not Falmouth). Charged "1/-" Packet Rate on arrival with London 14 Feb. 1844 transit c.d.s. Rare thus; very early for a W.A. letter sent via India, and clearly benefiting from the writer's access to a semi-official mail-route to India via Ceylon. Photo £500

1098 PAIR OF NAVAL BAG COVERS WITH G.B. STAMPS FROM ADEN & GALLE; Unusual pair of 21/30 Jan. 1877 envs. (some creasing & wear) to the same Kent address; research has shown that they were most likely posted at Aden and Galle by a passenger/crew-member of the P&O S.S. 'Deccan', because their London arrival datesamps (3 Feb. & 26 Feb. 1877) are consistent with these ports of call; the first (ex Aden) is franked with 8 G.B. 1d Reds (pl.175/179) tied by London "FB" cancels struck on arrival, and the second (ex Galle) is franked with 9 G.B. 1d Reds (pl.178/182) tied by London "43" numerals struck on arrival.
