(minor creasing; opened out for display) from Dunfermline to Edinburgh franked by a 1d Black (LE; good to wide margins) messily cancelled (but well tied) by an oily orange-red Malterse Cross, having all four flaps with texts advertising the "Scottish Amicable Society" printed in blue. The cover is also sealed with the very rare small embossed wafer-seal, inscribed "THANK ROWLAND HILL FOR THIS" (few examples known). Doubly rare 1d Black cover; very few are known with printed advertising of any kind, and this Rowland Hill seal is likewise very rare. Photo £500

551 "POSTAL DISTRICT ENVELOPE" USED FROM LONDON; 8 June 1858 usage of "T.R.P. & Co'S POSTAL DISTRICT ENVELOPE" (some staining; opened out for display, etc.) with London "Principal Places" and their new Postal District initials printed inside, franked by 1d "stars" (crease) tied by the London EC "74" duplex and addressed to Lincolnshire; there is a fine and large hand-printed advert on the reverse of the envelope as well; "T. CULLETON/HERALDIC ENGRAVER/To the Queen & Royal Family/2 Long Acre, London". Doubly rare advertising cover. (minor wear; opened out for display) to St. Ives franked by 1d "stars" tied by a partly very fine "LEAMINGTON/444" Spoon duplex, having a most attractive internal printed pictorial advert for "MANCHESTER ENVELOPES SOLD BY LOVE AND BARTON STATIONERS, MARKET PLACE" with a detailed street-map of the centre of the city, a pretty engraving of the shop, and a separate text. 558 EARLY LONDON FOREIGN BRANCH "REGISTERED/[Crown]" WITH "Oz at 6s/8d per Oz" MARKING; 30 Mar. - 9 Apr. 1821 EL (interesting family letter) from "Dresden" to London endorsed "via Ostende" and "recommandirt" having a faint Dresden c.d.s. and fair red "RECOMMANDIRT" on the front, along with partly fine claret-red "REGISTERED/[Crown]" and almost very fine "Oz at 6s/8d per Oz" mark, both struck in transit in London PO's Foreign Branch. Charged "6/8" for a one ounce weight; an unusual combination of marks. Rare early Registered Letter. Photo £125
