RECENT BATTLE, ETC.; Fascinating 12 Aug. 1879 EL (minor understandable overall toning) from "Ulundi" addressed c/o the Chief of Police at "D'Urban", endorsed "Free. Zululand. Wm. Jn. Kolau [?], Capt. Comng. Pioneers, Col. Clarke's Column", and "Envelopes & stamps unobtainable. On Active Service", having a faint "[ULUNDI?]/NATAL" quartered circle d.s. on the front and a fine 18 Aug. "DURBAN/NATAL" arrival c.d.s. across the join on the reverse. The contents refer to the recent famous (and decisive) British Victory at the Battle of Ulundi (4 July), in which the writer took part:- "...whilst in the Field, the facilities for corresponding are not many...We were first of all told off to No.2 Div. (Newdigate's) & built the fort at Conference Hill. We were then posted to Wood's & cleared the way for him to Ulundi, taking part in the fight there...We went over the battle-field y[ester]day; lots of skeletons of men & horses etc.; a little over a month since that event." Rare Active Service cover with historic contents and rare postal endorsements. Plus a battered copy of "With the Show Through Southern Africa" (1885) by C. 384 MISCELLANY comprising 1840 1d plate 2 (QI) on E sealed by red wax Anti-Corn Law League seal from Manchester to London tied by a good strike of the distinctive Manchester "Fishtail" MC in black (3 wide margins, shaved at top), 1840 1d plate 7, SI on E from Aberdeen to Edinburgh with a ruby MC (adhesive with close to wide margins, vertical crease), 1840 2d blue plate 1, KA, KB with superb central black MC, SG on part E from Leeds to Wakefield with a black Leeds MC cancellation (smudged), plate 2 (CD, poor to good only), 1841 1d red (TF, just shaved at left) tied to a small piece with two strikes of a red MC (rare thus) and a group of covers/fronts bearing 1841 1d reds with distinctive MC cancels of Coventry, Dublin (3), Greenock (5), Leamington (cancelling a creased pair of plate 9, HA-HB on cover to London), Norwich (on front) & Stirling.
