979 ROWLAND HILL - SIGNED LETTER FROM THE "GENERAL POST OFFICE"; 25 Sept. 1857 letter (glue mounts on reverse of integral blank) headed from "General Post Office" signed by Rowland Hill, addressed to "J.A. Symonds, M.D." (the author, 1807-71; see D.N.B. entry - p.copy included), thanking him for "your work on the 'Principles of Beauty'..." Good autograph of Hill during his tenure at the Post Office. (Stereo A158) from London (fine boxed "T·P/Mortlake" mark in black on the front cancelled with a v. fine orange-red Maltese Cross, and addressed to "The Officiating Church Minister of Haddington, N[orth] B[ritain]", which was apparently the same individual as that to whom the Lesage Caricature (see below) was addressed, and from the same original Highland source. 984 THE VERY RARE LESAGE "PARSONS GOING IT..." CARICATURE USED FROM EDINBURGH WITH 1d BLACK; 20 June 1840 usage of the very rare "CLERICAL ENVELOPE No.2" Mulready Caricature envelope (slightly grubby along edges, with minor wear and slight creasing, but most attractive; flaps open out for display) with "A. Lesage, 21 Hanover St." imprint on flap, franked with Plate 3 1d Black (HH; almost 4 margins) tied by a lovely red Maltese Cross, with v. fine red Edinburgh "JUN/N 20 A/1840" c.d.s. on the reverse; addressed to "The Revd. John Cook, Min[iste]r of Haddington". The scene on the front is captioned "The Parsons going it in the face of the Law", and the four flaps have scenes of similarly extravagant clerical goings on! This Lesage Caricature was recently discovered by Cavendish's representative in the Highlands and has not previously been recorded; Bodily/Jarvis/Hahn only record one other sound used example of this Caricature.
