PRE-U.P.U. "WHITE FATHERS" "DOUBLE QUEEN" COMBINATION COVER; Very fine and attractive April 1899 env. to Algeria franked with Uganda QV 1a red in one corner (tied by fine oval purple "SMITH MACKENZIE & Co." cachet alone) and B.E.A. 21&Mac218;2as blue (tied by partial Mombasa Squared Circle) in the other corner, having a very fine octagon-framed "LA REUNION A MARSEILLE 1º./L.U.N°.1" datestamp nerarby, and a fine "ZANZIBAR" (25 Apr.) transit backstamp. The Uganda stamp was only valid within the British Empire, so the full U.P.U. rate also had to be paid on from B.E.A. to Algeria. Very rare thus; only three such White Fathers "Double Queen" covers are recorded (see also the next two lots), because this combination was only required for mail to non-British Empire countries sent prior to Uganda joining the U.P.U. on 1 Apr. 1901. Exhibition Item. [Ex Pennycuick, 1975.] Photo

VERY RARE "TORO" COVER TO CANADA WITH MULTIPLE REDIRECTION MARKS IN TRANSIT FOR OVER A YEAR; Spectacular 1 May 1899 env. addressed to "Blacklead Island, Cumberland Sound, North West Canada" franked by Uganda QV 1a red (Imperial Penny Postage rate), tied by very fine rare "TORO" c.d.s. (only four examples known on cover of which this is the earliest) and by similar Kamapala (10 May) transit c.d.s. The addressee could not readily be located, so the letter was sent all the way back to Uganda, having a superb large (Victoria, Canada?) "RETURNED-FOR/BETTER- DIRECTION" mark, with similar framed "UNDELIVERED FOR REASON/STATED ON COVER" and light purple framed "Addresse Insuffisante/Insufficient Address". There are many transit c.d.s.'s (mostly on the reverse and almost surprisingly clear); Mombasa (15 June 1899 + 12 July 1900!!!), Edmonton (31 July), Regina (3 Aug.), Cumberland (16 Aug.), Nanaimo (18 Aug.), Victoria D.L.O. (22 Aug.), Ottawa D.L.O. (13 Sept.), and Zanzibar (7 Nov.). Very rare destination and cancellation with marvellous transit marks. [Purchased by Private Treaty, 1991.] Photo

EXTRAORDINARY "TRAVELLING POST/WHITE NILE" COVER TO GERMAN EAST AFRICA VIA SUDAN; Oct./Nov. 1901 env. ("On Her Britannic Majesty's Service" heading) addressed to the Meteorologist "Herrn. Dr. Carl Uhlig, Dar-es-Salam, D.O.A., German East Africa", franked with vertical pair of Uganda QV 1a reds tied by very fine dotted diamond "Retta" cancels, having a partly fine large "TRAVELLING POST/WHITE NILE" c.d.s. (30 Nov.) on the front, along with blue crayon "5" marking. There are fair to fine backstamps of Khartoum (10 Dec.), Amb Beni Souef-Caire (16 Dec.), Aden (23 Dec.) and Dar es Salaam (10 Jan. 1902). Presumably this cover was sent from the most northerly area of Uganda (around Gondokoro), possibly from Dufile or Wadelai; it is very similar to the famous "GONDOKORO/PQST OFFICE" covers, and sent by the same Nile route. This unusual routing to Dar es Salaam via Cairo & Aden may have been due to concerns over mail security during the Boer War period.
