| EXPLORERS' LETTERS, 1874-93 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
VERY EARLY COVER FROM "GONDOKORO" WRITTEN & SIGNED BY COL. C.G. GORDON, HIMSELF; Fine 9 Sept. 1874 letter and long env. (latter with faults to right of address, possibly associated with carriage in the famous cleft-stick of the native runners), written & signed by "Chinese" Gordon and sent by native messenger to "Mr. [Carl] G[i]egler, Director of Telegraphs, Khartoum". Gordon had only been appointed "Governor General of the Equator" earlier in 1874, and his staff had rapidly been decimated by malaria on arrival in Uganda; his own nephew, Willy Anson, succombed (in the arms of Gordon's right-hand man, Romolo Gessi) and this letter relates to the sale of his effects. The original "Inventory of Mr. Anson's things" is still present; it lists such vital items as:- "12 Towels, 29 Shirts (assorted)...4 Neckties, 12 Cuffs...3 Tooth brushes...2 Puggeries [what?]...1 Pillow, 1 Mosquito Curtain...3 Pr of Shooting boots...", etc. Gordon asks the addressee to forward an enclosed letter and to sell the contents of "three boxes and a bag" of Anson's effects that were sent along with this letter. He also enclosed "an order on Ali Effendi for the payment of the sum of 147 shells(?)", and the flap of the envelope is endorsed (in German; presumably by the addressee) "Aly Effendi got the order to pay you the amount". Extremely rare early letter from what was to become Uganda, associated with this most famous man. [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £750 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE EARLY LETTER FROM UP-COUNTRY UGANDA, WRITTEN & SIGNED BY COL. C.G. GORDON HIMSELF; Fine 9 Jan. 1876 env. (+ letter written & signed by "Chinese" Gordon, Governor of Equatoria) addressed to "J. Geigler Esqre., Kartoum" (also adddressed in Arabic; "To the Engineer in charge of Telegraphs, Sudan") and sent by native runner from "Fatiko", the small military fort between Lakes Albert and Victoria. The letter relates to Gordon's ongoing efforts to bring small steam-vessels right up the Nile; "At last the whole of the steamer & two life boats are at Dufli, and a few months will finish them...I am starting for Mrooli via Fouveira in a few days...the wants of soldiers take all the porters & even I have to leave my bed behind." Fascinating insight into Gordon's difficulties in travelling in Uganda at this early date. [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £650 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE EARLY LETTER FROM DUFILŠ WRITTEN & SIGNED BY COL. C.G. GORDON HIMSELF; 12 Mar. 1876 env. (small corner fault well clear of address) with original letter (central fault clear of heading and signature) headed from "Dufli" (the small village on the Nile at 3ƒ 45' N, 32ƒ 0' E), addressed to "J. Geigler Esqr., Care of J. Rossitz Esqr., Consul for Germany, Kartoum", sent by native runner and so with Arabic endorsement "Khartoum" on the front. Gordon gives further news of the progress of his steam-vessels up the Nile; "Gessi has gone with two life Boats to the Lake [Lake Albert]. Kabba Rega [King of Unyoro] has disappeared...The [military] stations along my line are now all completed. If you see Baker, Grant and others [in England], let me warn you to be careful, for neither of the two first named men have scrupled to use my letters to them to suit their own ends. I have ceased therefore to have anything to say to either of them (Baker or [Grant])." Rare early letter from this part of the world, and an important insight into Gordon's opinions of the explorers Baker & Grant. | 268 | RARE EARLY LETTER FROM MAGUNGO (ON LAKE ALBERT) WRITTEN & SIGNED BY COL. C.G. GORDON, HIMSELF; 4 Aug. 1876 letter (+ long env.; both somewhat grubby and worn but complete, and the env. sealed with an 80%-complete impression of Gordon's personal red wax Chinese mandarin seal), headed from "Magungo" and addressed to "R. Gessi Esqre., Kartoum", with additional Arabic endorsement ("Gessi, Khartoum"). The letter instructs Gessi (Gordon's right-hand man) to pay Louis Lucas £102 for various articles that had been purchased from him by Gordon on behalf of the Egyptian Government. It is recorded that Lucas was "a young explorer who had been a nuisance and had then gone mad" (he died en route to Suakin to convalesce)! Rare example of Gordon's personal Chinese Mandarin seal used in Central Africa. One month later Gordon headed back to England. | 269 | RARE SUDAN "HARTUM" DATESTAMP ON INGOING COVER EX G.B. FROM SIR SAMUEL BAKER REF. COL. GORDON; 13 Apr. 1876 env. (stamp cut away) from Devon (Newton Abbot) to Giegler "Chef des Telegraphs, Khartoum, Egypte", with original letter written & signed by Sir Samuel Baker (Gordon's predecessor as first Governor of Equatoria) with interesting contents about Gordon, and having "POSTE EGIZIANE" c.d.s. backstamps of Alexandria and Siut, plus very rare (faint but legible) "HARTUM" c.d.s. (the first-type mark of Sudan). Baker discusses the Abyssinia Campaign, the purchase of Suez Canal shares by the British Government, and comments on Gordon; "Colonel Gordon has kept me very kindly 'au courant' of all that has passed in the Upper Nile territory, and I feel that no one could be better fitted, both by character and physical constitution, than himself for the difficult task of Negro rule." But Gordon had little time for the ineffectual Baker; see previous lot. Few examples of the Hartum c.d.s. are known. [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £200 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE SUDAN "HARTUM" DATESTAMP ON FINE INGOING COVER EX G.B. WRITTEN & SIGNED BY THE EXPLORER, JAMES GRANT; Fine & attractive 27/29 July 1879 env. (+ contents) addressed to "C. Giegler Esqr., Supt. Telegraph Dept., Khartoum, Upper Egypt", franked by G.B. 2‡d rosy-mauve tied by v. fine "NAIRN" duplex, having a partly fine (and readily recognisable) strike of the rare First-type "POSTE EGIZIANE/HARTUM" c.d.s. on the reverse. Grant (who accompanied Speke on his second African exploration of 1860-3) discusses the proposed Cape Town to Egypt telegraph line; "The Supt. at the Cape, Mr. Sivewright, proposes a line from Kimberley or Pretoria to Nyassa - thence to Zanzibar, Uganda, Gondokoro, etc....I have obtained the opinions of several travellers in Africa - Baker, Cameron, Stanley...the only one who is dead against the proposal is Sir Samuel Baker; he thinks the Shilllooks, Denkas, Nouers &c would never for a moment stand the temptation, because the iron would be as valuable to them as gold is to us, However I am anxious to have your candid opinion...Does Col. Gordon think it practicable?..." Long and fascinating account of the plans and likely problems for such a project. Rare Postal History combined with unusual History. Few such early ingoing covers from G.B. to Sudan are known, and this Hartum c.d.s. is rare.[Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £500 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Similar 26 Dec. 1878 letter (no env.) from the same correspondence, written and signed by Grant and clearly written to Giegler. Grant gives an update on the plans for a trans-Africa overland telegraph line, outlining various subtle diplomatic moves and covering such practical details as the idea of using Indian Elephants to help the work, the proposed route, the costs, etc. He also mentions that he had just had a letter from "Mr. Stanley; he had heard from Mr. Gordon Bennett who was in St. Petersburg...I have a conviction that Stanley would be an admirable pioneer for an Overland Tel. line..." Historical letter from a famous Explorer. [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] | £100 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
RARE SUDAN "HARTUM" & "WADI HALFE" DATESTAMPS ON INGOING REDIRECTED COVER EX SIR SAMUEL BAKER; 18 Sept. 1878 env. (stamp cut away) from Devon (Dartmouth) to Giegler at "Khartoum" but redirected to Cairo, having several transit backstamps including a blurred "HARTUM" (?) c.d.s. and a mostly fine rare bilingual "WADI HALFE" c.d.s. The letter from Sir Samuel Baker concerns an enclosed Times cutting (still present) giving an update on Gordon's Expedition to Uganda that Giegler had sent to Baker, a proposal of Gordon's to have Giegler paid for his trouble, and reminiscences of Baker's own earlier Expedition; "When I first started the Expedition, all the English papers prophesied disaster and declared that no reforms would be durable...The fact of Colonel Gordon's appointment after me rivetted the dominion of Europeans in the Soudan, and doomed the slave-trade to extinction." [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £200 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM SIR SAMUEL BAKER TO COL. C.G. GORDON IN KHARTOUM; 18 Sept. 1878 letter (no env.) sent from Devon to "My dear Colonel Gordon" by Sir Samuel Baker, the former Governor of Equatoria (and Gordon's predecessor in that role), with long and interesting views about using Indian elephants for warfare etc. in Africa. "The success of the Indian elephants is most gratifying... As you know, [ref. capturing African elephants] there are localities close to Lardo, and also at Gondokoro, where the elephants arrive at a particular season regularly...If you had 50 elephants you might march through all Africa..."; also commenting on the 2nd Afghan War, the Berlin Congress, Cyprus, etc. Rare letter from one Equatoria Governor to another. [Purchased by Private Treaty, April 1975.] | £150 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
EARLY COVER FORWARDED BY COL. GORDON FROM KHARTOUM, WITH LETTER FROM SIR SAMUEL BAKER; 5 Nov. 1878 letter (no original env.; on Newton Abbot notepaper) written & signed by the former Governor of Equatoria, Sir Samuel Baker, to Giegler at Cairo. Apparently sent under cover to Gordon in Khartoum, who placed it in the accompanying second envelope (stamp tragically torn away), addressed it and endorsed it "To await arrival", and posted it to Cairo; having two partial strikes of the rare small 1st-Type "HARTUM" c.d.s. on the front (one had originally cancelled the stamp!), with Siut & Cairo c.d.s.'s on the reverse. The letter concerns European politics and the plans for a trans-Africa telegraph line via Uganda; "...concerning the Central African Telegraph...I cannot help thinking the natives would destroy it for the sake of the iron wire, bad though it may be. At Gondokoro they cut a waggon all to pieces to steal the iron-work...I also think the wild elephants would pull down the posts...I would commence with a section of about a mile in the Shillook country and prove whether it would be molested." One wonders how disparaging (see Gordon's and Grant's comments on Baker above) Gordon's covering note to this letter would have been! Rare thus; very few stamped covers cancelled with the small Hartum c.d.s. are known; nevertheless an important historical letter. [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] PHOTO - see plate no. | £200 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
VERY EARLY MISSIONARY LETTER WITH CONTENTS REF. TRYING TO "ARRANGE A MONTHLY POST" IN UGANDA; 29 Jan. 1879 letter (no env., but in fine condition) headed from "M'Rooli, Unyoro" (between Lakes Albert & Victoria), written by Charles W. Pearson one of the Missionaries of the pioneering C.M.S. "Nile Party", sent to Carl Giegler [at Khartoum], with most interesting contents, inc.; "After many delays and much sickness, with the death of our Alexandrian dragoman, we have at last arrived here...The King, M'Tesa, has sent porters to carry our luggage...We are writing to London for various supplies, and we wish to have them sent out via the Nile, in preference to the Zanzibar route...I should like to prove to the supporters of the East Coast Route to Uganda...the superiority of this way...the Zanzibar party were robbed wholesale and were a very long time on the way. We are going to try to get M'Tesa to allow us to arrange a monthly post. Mr. Wilson thinks he will not make an objection. Should we succeed, it will be a great boon to us; Mr. Wilson has been as long as 15 months without letters...[we] expect to be in Rubaga before many days are over." Plus an enclosed list of supplies required to be sent up the Nile ("3 Cases good Brandy, 5 Boxes Cigars", etc.!!). Important historical letter from the very start of the Missionary presence in Uganda; at this date there was only one European in Uganda, the Mr. Wilson referred to here! [Purchased by Private Treaty in April 1975.] Photo | £400 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
THE LUGARD EXPEDITION - COVER TO SUAKIN MISSENT TO INDIA & REDIRECTED TO G.B.; Rare [c.March] 1891 env. (small faults) from up-country Uganda, initialled at lower left by "F[rederick]. D[ealtry]. L[ugard]." - the Commander of the 1890-2 Uganda Expedition; these initials enabled the Mombasa P.O. to charge the sender for the stamps applied there for onwards postage to overseas. In this case, the letter was accidentally "MISSENT IN/INDIAN MAIL" (fair boxed mark on front) to Bombay (20 July) via Zanzibar (v. fine small 3 July c.d.s.) and the Aden-Bombay "SEA POST OFFICE" (24 July), reaching Suakin (10 Aug.) via Aden (1 Aug.). It was prepaid at Mombasa (2 July) where the P.O. endorsed it "3as" and applied I.B.E.A.C. stamps (probably a 1a plus 2a); however, the stamps were removed in transit (at Suakin?), as witnessed by the space where they were affixed being overstruck by the London "5D/F.B." arrival charge-mark for an unpaid letter. One of only two recorded covers from Lugard in Uganda. Very rare. [Ex G. Freschi.] Photo | £1000 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
THE UNIQUE (?) INGOING MISSIONARY COVER TO UGANDA WITH THE ARABIC "T" MARK; c. Dec. 1892 env. (minor faults and overall wrinkling do not detract) with "CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY" flap addressed to "The Rt. Rev. B[isho]p Tucker in Uganda, c/o Imperial British East Africa Co.", having no stamps or other postal marks, but with an attractive brownish-black handstruck "seal"-type mark at top right of address, with Arabic inscription above a capital "T". This Arabic inscription has been translated as "Tilor" or "Tailor", and is therefore believed to be the special messenger-mark of Rev. W.E. Taylor who was stationed at Mombasa during Rev. Tucker's early visit to Uganda, prior to the establishment of a full postal service to the interior. It seems likely that this Arabic mark was intended to give some kind of security to the letter if it fell into Arab slave-trader hands en route from Mombasa. This cover was illustrated by Robson Lowe in his monograph "The Uganda Missionaries" (Aug. 1974 supplement to 'The Philatelist'), when he suggested that the mark could relate to a special "postal service ...organised in the Kingdom of Unroyo". We have found no other record of this mark, nor of any other such early C.M.S. mail addressed into Uganda. Very rare and interesting. | 278 | SIR GERALD PORTAL MISSION TO UGANDA - INITALLED I.B.E.A.C. 2‡-ANNA RATE COVER TO G.B.; c.1st Feb. 1893 env. (initialled by "C.H.V." - Charles Hyde Villiers, who joined the historic Sir George Portal Mission in Uganda in 1892/3), probably from Machakos, franked (at Mombasa) by B.E.A.I.C. 2‡a black on pale buff tied by a light Mombasa Squared Circle (7 Mar.), having mostly v. fine c.d.s.'s on the reverse of Mombasa (28 Feb.), Zanzibar (8 Mar.) & Aden (29 Mar.). An early usage of the 2‡a rate to G.B., and a rare cover from the Portal Mission in Uganda. Photo | £300 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
