AND VERY EARLY OVAL-FRAMED "BATH/UNPAID/PENNY POST" MARK ON COVER; Remarkable 14 Feb. 1811 EL (stained around mark where one vandal appears to have tried to remove a previous vandal's inking-in of the Bath mark!) from "No.10 Lansdown Prison, Bath" (possibly from a disgruntled school-child?!), charged "8" with only one handstruck mark - a fine (but subsequently inked-in) oval-framed "BATH/UNPAID/PENNY POST" mark (UNRECORDED in the County Catalogue, but illustrated - p.25 - by Geoff Oxley in his definitive Penny Posts book). This cover - ex Col. Guy Crouch - appears still to be the sole recorded example of this mark. The letter's early date - prior to the general issue of standard "Penny Post" marks (see Oxley, p.19) in mid-1811 - is significant, becasue it is clear that the Bath Penny Post system existed before this, and so it seems that its Postmaster chose to introduce his own mark early. In spite of condition, an Important Exhibition Item. Photo

TAUNTON - THE RARE "TAUNTON/5" Clause Post" MARK ON COVER, ETC.; 8 Aug. 1818 local EL from "Tarr" to Taunton with a fine boxed "No.3" on the flap and an almost very fine strike of the short-lived "TANUNTON/5" Clause Post" mark (1817-21 only) nicely placed on the front. One of the most difficult of all the 5th Clause Post marks to find. The letter was oddly charged the full General Post rate of 5d. Plus an 1826 EL to Tenby with scarce "DUNSTER" mileage mark and matching boxed "No.4", showing that the letter was carried by the 5th Clause Post, though the 5th Clause mark had gone out of use by this date. (2 covers). Photo

The redirected cover also with partly fine all-in-one "HONITON Penny Post" mark. A strange error to pass into use! (2 covers). Photo
