ELIZABETHAN EXCHEQUER WARRANT FOR A ROYAL MESSENGER, SIGNED BY 'WINCHESTER': Large part c1550-72 Exchequer Warrant for the payment of £4.14s.4d for a 35-day journey conveying 'my Lord's Ires' to unnamed parties, at 2s8d per day. The document is signed at the foot by William Paulet, 1st. Marquis 'Winchester', Queen Elizabeth's treasurer from 1550 until his death in 1572; it confirms that this amount was 'also payd by way of the tellers of the Quyn's Matie's Recepte at Westmester'. Albeit an incomplete example but thereby more suitable for an album-page than a full size warrants - and clearly signed. PHOTO - see plate no. |

JOSEPH ADY, SWINDLER EXTRAORDINARY, CAMPAIGNS AGAINST THE GENERAL POST OFFICE (& THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND!): 1846 Printed Pictorial unpaid EL from Ady addressed to a Dorchester solicitor and charged '2' with a very fine 'Whitechapel' mark, having a diatribe against the Church and against the P.O.s having prosecuted him for sending out 'junk mail' in vast quantities; 'Joseph Ady was placed in the Felon's Dock charged by Hy. Bourne, the President of the Inland department of the General Post Office, with obtaining Money under false pretences...', having a military style portrait (of Ady himself?) at the top. This famous postal swindler eventually (1847) caused the P.O. to change the law so that the postage due for unpaid letters that were refused or undelivered had to be paid for by their original sender. This put him out of business! The first example of this circular that we have seen. PHOTO - see plate no. |

NEWLY DISCOVERED EARLY CARLISLE/WHITEHAVEN T.P.O. "CARLISLE/W" DATESTAMPS, ETC.; 1864/8 trio of 1d Red (2) or OHMS covers addressed to Whitehaven ex London (2) or Carlisle, all having very fine strikes of a distinctive "CARLISLE" c.d.s. with fixed "W" code at right, and with "A" code at left; this c.d.s. is recorded as having been issued on 22 Dec. 1862, and it seems that it is the forerunner of the Whitehaven S.T. railway marks that are known from 1875 onwards. The "W" code presumably stood for "Whitehaven"; it would therefore be a similar early TPO mark to the Edinburgh "M" and Glasgow "*" coded c.d.s.'s of the similar late 1850s/early 1860s period. Plus 1860 1d Red env. with scarce "L.C/R" mark of the Carlisle & Lancaster Railway, 1905 small "WHITEHAVEN S.T" c.d.s. on regd. cover and 3 other covers. (8 covers). Photo |
