RARE "LARGE E"-CODE FREE MARKS, ETC.; Genuine 8 & 15 July 1837 free fronts both sent from London (to Watford & Bury, Suff.), each with an almost very fine strike of the very rare crown-inside-circle London crowned "FREE" Datestamp with rare LARGE "E" code at foot. Very few examples of this mark are known, even on fronts. Plus 3 genuine 4d-Post Period free fronts with single-ring uncoded "FREE" datestamps all addressed to Lady Hamlyn-Williams, 3 scalloped "SUN" marks on fronts, and a 1795 London 3-ring "PAID" EL. (9 items). Photo

Similar group of earlier 1830s "O"-code Free fronts, including three sent cross-country (and so not needing any London mark!); 1838-9 fronts (6) all ex the Hamlyn-Williams album, dated from Sept. 1838 to 2 Dec. 1839 and all with very fine strikes of the "O"-code crown-on-top "FREE" datestamps; purportedly from Chudleigh, Rotherham, London (2), and Windsor (2). Three of the routes supposedly taken by the letters would not have involved any travel through London, and so there is even less pretence that their Free marks were genuine! Plus the original c.1900 letter (on Clovelly Court notepaper) from a descendant of Lady Hamlyn-Williams about the free fronts in the famous H-W album. (6 fronts).

"O"-CODE FREE FRONTS ADDRESSED TO THE MABERLY FAMILY DURING THE 4d-POST PERIOD; Remarkable trio of free fronts addressed to "Mrs. Maberly" (1) or to "Lt. Col. Maberly" (2; the Secretary to the P.O. in 1839/40) at a Berkeley Street address (2) or at the GPO (1), all with very fine posthumous "Crown-on-top" "O"-code London crowned "FREE" datestamps for 2, 3 & 5 Jan. 1840 (all 4d Post Period); they purport to have been sent from Wycombe, Lisburn (rare from Ireland) and Brighton. Given the other "O"-code fronts known from the collection of the wife of the PMG, Lord Lichfield, these fronts suggest that the posthumous use of this "FREE" datestamp was arranged at the highest level of the P.O., to appease officials' wives who were still actively collecting autographed free fronts after 10 Jan. 1840! (3 fronts). Photo
