Letters from Hill during his LBR period are much rarer than those assocaited with his P.O. work. 956 RARE Q.V. 3d JUBILEE ESSAY WITH "RAILWAY/LETTER/POSTAGE" OVERPRINT; 1890 unused QV 3d Jubilee with the rare "RAILWAY/LETTER/POSTAGE" Essay overprint in black with RPS 1973 Certificate of Genuineness. Few examples known; produced when the P.O. was considering a single stamp for all the Railway Companies, to use for the Railway Letter Scheme that was to be introduced in 1891. Plus an original printed 1891 "Post Office Act" giving the PMG powers to arrange for mail to be carried by other organisations apart from the P.O. (i.e. via Railway Companies). Rare pair (2 items). RAILWAY LETTER-STAMPS COLLECTION; 1891-1920 detailed study (much written up for Exhibition and mostly allocated to the 30+ different recorded printings, with a few sheetlets & blocks, some varieties, one Plate Proof, a few of the rare 3d/4d Provisionals, etc., etc. Very detailed lot which would repay careful sorting and re-mounting. Michael spent a number of years working on the fiendishly difficult subject of the LBSCR printings and this lot includes the results of his researches, with a number of items of which only a handful have been recorded. RAILWAY LETTER-STAMPS COLLECTION; 1891-1901 Collection - mostly hand-picked for cancellation interest - of 2d green LBSCR letter-stamps with telegraphic number-in-circle, scarce straight-line Station marks, 2-ring "GOV/RATE" cancels, manuscript cancels, a few purple oval/2-line marks, and a very good range of the scarce small station ovals. Many allocated to the various QV-period printings, and inc. some early usages. Three examples on pieces with 1d lilacs (NEWICK STATION oval, "1484" in circle & manuscript cancels). Ideal for further expansion, but an extremely difficult lot to assemble. Also ideal for any Sussex Postal Historian, because many of these cancels have never been recorded on covers.
