1080 PENNY BLACK COVER TO WORTHING WITH CHARMING POEM ABOUT THE NEWLY INTRODUCED ADHESIVE ITSELF: EL ex Rugeley (Staffs.) bearing 1d, BJ (four margins but apparently does not belong) addressed to the wife of Admiral Sir George Pechell MP with delightful contents - a poem about the 1d black itself, commencing "Oh our sweet little Queen! what beauties adorn her, Though hut funny she looks then stuck in a corner, None can doubt who have eyes, even radically mulish, She's a penny wise Queen, not a Sovereign foolish" and after two intermediary verses concludes "For a penny address we apply to the crown, and it knocks your preposterous prepaying quite down, and with feelings most loyal to the office you range, pop your Queen letter in and never want change". Some internal repair (sellotape) but a fascinating item nevertheless. £100

R....EZ & Co."/NEW YORK" cachet on the top flap, near fine red boxed "COLONIES/&C ART.13[?]" on the front beside a mostly fine rare boxed step-type "WORTHING/SHIP LETTER" (Rob.S1; the only Ship Letter mark recorded for Worthing, of which only 8 or 9 examples have been recorded, including no less than 5 in the John Hobbs Collection). The only Worthing Ship Letter addressed to France that we can recall having seen.
