| 4194 | THE TITANIC DISASTER, REPORTED DAY-BY-DAY IN 'THE EVENING NEWS' three months' complete issues of the London daily newspaper, 1st April - 29th June 1912, each one 8pp. 23" x 17". Fine, contemporary binding in half morocco and cloth. The first front-page headline which reports, "The Biggest Shipwreck in the World : The Titanic collides with an Iceberg", appeared on Monday 15th 1912. The disaster and its aftermath including the strike of the 'Olympic' seamen continued as headline news for two weeks and intermittantly thereafter. The newspaper's coverage was described at the time as, "by far the most coherent, logical and accurate account of the fate of the Titanic". Unlike most of the London broadsheets, the 'Evening News' carried news and photos on its front page, making it one of the most striking of contemporary records. The collision occurred just before midnight on Sunday 14 April 1912 and its full scale was unknown for several hours, so 'The Evening News' scooped the morning papers, whose main editions for 15th April had already gone to press. In common with most newspapers of this date, the paper is fragile and has to be handled with great care. There are some creases and chips but the strong binding has protected it well. (N.B. Because of the weight of approx. 8kg., this lot remains with the Devon vendor. Detailed queries can be directed to him on 01395 577278). ** PHOTO | £500 | ||||||||||||||||||||||
