The letter gives detailed news from the island, inc. a detailed account of the recent capture of a run-away soldier accused of murder, who took refuge in the writer's stable; "This is such a warlike place; we have Barracks on both sides of us and nothing but parading of soldiers...one of them has been charged since we came here; he shot one of the other men. He was not found for days...the Colonel ordered out the whole Regiment, he at their head, with orders to search every house...[we ordered a servant] to go to our loft...there he was!" Note: when the original impression of the upper right corner stamp [pos. 10] was laid down, it was placed slightly too far to the right. This was corrected, but traces of this first re-entry can still be seen as extensive doubling of the whole design. The most prominent of these can be seen in the engine turning at the right, and in various duplicated portions of the lettering in the scroll, as well as in the outline & upper leaves of the pineapple.
