502 EXPERIMENTAL U.S. NAVY FLIGHT: 1919 (29 Jan.) opened out env. from Nassau to N. York City franked at the normal 2d rate with "BY AIR SERVICE/NASSAU TO MIAMI" h.s. and c.d.s. of Nassau for 29th & 30th Jan 1919. Also a 1919 (30 Jan.) 1d postcard from Nassau to N. York with red "FIRST TRIP/AEROPLANE" & " NASSAU TO MIAMI" h.s. The flight was delayed from 29th to 30th Jan. because of mechanical problems on the two seaplanes. A rare pair showing the normal 1d postcard and 2d letter rate as no additional charges for this flight were raised. PHOTO - see plate no. 10B £150

504 EXPERIMENTAL U.S. NAVAL FLIGHT: 1919 (29 Jan.) opened out env. carried at the normal 2d postage rate, from the Royal Bank of Canada, Nassau to N. York City with "BY AIR SERVICE/NASSAU TO MIAMI" h.s., This flight was intended for 29th Jan. but took place on 30th Jan, the cover bears both c.d.s. Note: Although this flight is well documented in local newspapers at Nassau, the US navy department have has no record of this flight claiming that their first airmail flight over the sea was to Havana later in the year! £80
505 COVER CARRIED ON THE CURTIS FALCON SEAPLANE - PROBABLY A RUM RUNNING TRIP: 1926 (8 Nov.) 2d registered env. used from Nassau to Boston (Mass.) franked with 1d tied by "NASSAU/BAHAMAS" c.d.s. and with a very fine "NASSAU/AIR MAIL" h.s. at lower left. Also a similar torn 1927 (28 March) env. These covers were carried by Curtis Falcon Seaplanes which were probably rum running at this time and the mail carried was a method of legitimising the flight. (2 covers). 506 RARE COVER CARRIED ON THE SECOND SURVEY FLIGHT: 1928 (9 Oct.) large env. carried on the second survey flight from Nassau to Miami franked with Bahamas 1d tied by "NASSAU/BAHAMAS" c.d.s. and an uncancelled USA 2c. The cover has m/s "First Air Mail Flight Miami to Nassau N.P." and bears the "O.W. PITTMAN/POSTMASTER" violet h.s. The contents are a letter from J.H.Peet the acting postmaster at Nassau O.W. Pittman and state "It would indeed facilitate business relations between your city and also the whole of the State and here if all our mail could be carried by Air" and "I am returning herewith the five Air Mail service cover, duly datestamped.". 507 THE FOURTH EXPERIMENTAL FLIGHT: 1928 (16 Oct.) much repaired env. from Nassau to Sutton Coldfield franked at the 1d rate with red "1ST FLIGHT BAHAMAS/OFFICIAL AIR POST" h.s. endorsed on reverse "Certified as carried first experimental air mail (official) from the Bahamas. Recieved 26 10 28" and signed by Francis Field. Note: This cover was carried on the fourth survey flight between Miami and Nassau. It was the first of these flights to be officially dedicated to carry mail, although a few items were unofficially carried on the second survey flight. PHOTO - see plate no. 10B £160
