365 THE RARE RED CROSS OVERPRINT ESSAY: A handdrawn essay on tracing paper mounted on card of the proposed red cross overprint dated in m/s "27 12 16" and "dupl.". Some "crinkling" but rare. Note: In 1916 it was proposed to issue a special stamp as a contribution to the funds of the Bahamas Red Cross society. The overprint was to be in the form of a red cross and the date of issue. The stamp was not requisitioned until 15 Dec. 1916, there was therefore no hope of it being available on time. On 20th dec. De La Rue submitted three handrawn essays. The one offered is a duplicate of a rejected design. The adopted design was signed by Sir W Mercer and the stamps eventually issued on 18th May 1917. PHOTO £400

379 1918 "W" OF "WAR" INSERTED BY HAND VARIETY: 1918 (21 Feb-10 July) 3d purple on yellow, a corner block of six (3 x 2) from the upper left of the sheet, the first stamp with "W of WAR inserted by hand" variety, small portion of "W" printed on reverse due to the paper being folded when passing through the printing press. Corner faults consistant with such a variety. The only example we have seen. Note: when the sheet was being placed on the press for overprintig, the top left margin was folded over, and the letter "W" of "WAR" was therefore printed on the back of the sheet. When the sheets were checked by the printers this was spotted, the missing "W" was then inserted by hand slightly out of its proper position. PHOTO - see plate no. £400
