284 MASTER DIE PROOF: A master die proof with blank value in black on glazed card (92 x 60mm), unmarked. Note: In 1883 (August) De La Rue were asked to submit designs for new 5/- and £1. They sent designs for larger adhesives which were rejected. It was suggested that they submit an alternative design for a key plate and duty plate design . Samples were sent to the colony taken from the general key plate die with the duties drawn in by hand, followed subseuently on 5th September by two stamps printed from the 1883 1/- plate with the value erased. Although these were approved on 15th November. De La Rue sent off a further design in black with a somewhat larger blank for the duty. This design was approved in December and the die and duty plates were produced. This master die proof was taken from this die and a printing plate of sixty then prepared. The first adhesives were despatched by the 12th May 1884. PHOTO £750

303 1D IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS IN ISSUED COLOURS: 1d black and red, vignette and frame plate 2, an imperforate corner block of four plate proofs from the top left of the sheet on ungummed watermarked (inverted) paper. A little creased but scarce. Note: The combination of vignette and frame plate 2 first occured on the Mult Crown CA issues of 1911. In 1949 a complete sheet of the 1d value from this plate combination with inverted watermark Crown CC paper was found. The sheet was in its original condition just as it had left the printing press, complete with marginal lines, guide crosses and circles in the margins plus plate number at lower left (the plate number pair was sold in the "Staircase" sale). It was the normal practice of the printers to close trim the sheets prior to despatch, a sheet with all the marginal markings would never have been issued to the Bahamas P.O. It is most likely to have been a trial sheet on CC paper which was retained in the printer's archives until they were dispersed in 1941 due to enemy action. PHOTO £500
