231 COVER TO USA FRANKED WITH 4D DULL ROSE PAIR CHARGED 6C POSTAGE DUE ON ARRIVAL: 1880 (20 May) OHMS env. from Bahamas to New Haven, Conneticut franked with 4d dull rose vertical pair to pay the rate of 8d for a letter to New York not exceeding ‡ weight, tied by "A05" cancellations., on arrival "U.S. CHARGE/TO/COLLECT 6 Cents" h.s. was applied and an irregular strip of three USA 1879-89 2c p. dues added. The env. is a little toned and has other faults. A rare use of Bahamas Chalon heads to an overseas destination. Note: A similar cover dated 5 Jan 1880 from the same correspondence was sold in the "Staircase" sale (April 1999) and the postage due was paid by a pair of 3c. The U.S. postage due adhesives were issued in 1879 and only used Bahamas joined the UPU on 1st July 1880. PHOTO - see plate no. £1500
